Ok Guys - nob alert.

I have a 6 foot manual angle Curtis plow - want to add power angle feature - absolute clueless as to how best to go about this.

Now the good part of this is the fact that I already have a 3rd function valve installed (for my grapple) so simplistic me is thinking all I need are two cylinders and a couple of hoses with fittings (cant be that easy can it). So I am at the Surplus Center web site and find myself somewhat clueless as to what specific cylinders to buy - I assume I get ones with one port (not two - yes) but isn't here different lengths of stroke I would need to account for...

Any help or direction to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Jim

Don't know much about snow other than its white and cold but to angle blade you would have to have cyl with two ports so as to control right or left movement. depends on how your mounting cyl as to wether you need 1 or 2 cyls it works kinda like cyl on grapple to open and close clamp. if mounting 2 cyls at opposite end of blade one of them has to mounted with base end one way and other has to be opposite way cyl has more power extended than retracting

Thanks Rocky - I guess my question really has more to do with how to go about selecting the type of cylinder. I sometimes see plows with one and others with two cylinders. My plow has location for two so I assume two is better than one eh - although I am not sure I follow the statement of mounting two bases opposite from one another. Might just call Surplus and get their opinion.

You are correct I don't explain my self when I write If your using one cyl only its stronger extending than retracting but if using two on each side it wouldn't matter. Type of cyl length of rod is determined by what you are controlling and how far you have to move it. diameter of cyl is determined by how much force is needed to move this object
probably a 1 inch diameter rod will work in this case length or stroke is to be determined. a two port cyl is needed because you are extended and retracting cyl hydraulically. the cheapest cyl you can buy are tie rod cyls. hope this better to understand good luck

You do not need pistons with 2 port for snow plow angling. How a snowplow is setup to angle with hydraulics is 2 single port pistons are used. 1 piston on each side. You feed one hydraulic line into 1 piston and the other into the 2nd piston. When you angle, one cylinder is pressurized and it moving forces the oil out of the 2nd piston so it retracts. I have enclosed some links from surplus center for pistons that would work. The only difference in them is the length. You can figure out what you need by measuring how mush the plow moves from straight position to turn on each side. I also included a picture of a plow setup. If you need more pictures let me know and I can take some of my plow.

Most snowplows use SA (single acting) 2x8 or 2x10 cylinders, you could try calling Curtis and see what they used since it was an option from them on that plow you have. You should also consider a Crossover Relief Valve as well to protect everything.
