You may have noticed that some people don't LOVE WalMart /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That's OK. But this ISN'T a WMBashing thread, OK? Good, here goes:

Our town is getting a new Supercenter. We already have one, but it's one of those old single story models.

The new one'll have two.

Rumor is, the old one'll be a Sam's.

But the real question is; how will they do a two story Walmart? Groceries on One, Lingerie on Two... (I used to work in a 12 story department store...)

How exactly do we get our cartfuls of WallyGoodies from one to the other?

The official reason for building up is to save space. Currently they require 20 acres to liven up a local economy, they want to get by on less....

Should prove interesting

Maybe they're gonna have Made In The USA stuff on one floor and Made In China stuff on the other?

Hmm...nah! Maybe a small room (size of a closet) for Made In America /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That might be interesting. Most of the dummies around here are too stupid to run an elevator. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

As well as elevators, perhaps they will put in ramps from one floor to the next, similar to what the Woodfield Mall in Schamburg, IL has.

The Target folks recently leveled our local store and immediately built an up-scale replacement, with an underground parking garage. They did it in record time, I might add. The new place includes something I had never seen before. Right next to the normal escalator leading down to the garage, there's a dedicated cart escalator. You shove your cart through this little gate, and some grabby fingers latch onto the bottom of the cart and genty roll it downstairs, coincidentally at the same speed as the human escalator. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The first time gives you that experimental feeling, but after that it's about as smooth and natural as you could imagine. You barely have to break stride to launch your cart on its way, and it always arrives downstairs at the same time you do. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Maybe the greeter will get promoted to elevator operator? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, I've been in multi-story stores that have elevators large enough for about three or four shopping carts at once, and the families that go with them too!

My brother has been working China for the past 3 months setting up a textile factory. He emailed the other day and said he'd be coming home in early January and he asked if I wanted him to bring me anything from China. I emailed back and said if I wanted anything from China I'd just go over to Wal-Mart and buy it! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS Please don't think I'm Wal-Mart bashing. I happen to shop there all the time.

This week I bought several items from Home Depot, Lowes, and a large locally owned hardware store. After reading this post, I got curious and went and looked. All the items I bought were from China except one. It was from Taiwan. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

A lot of difference ten years makes. I was looking at similar items I had bought from several years ago that are all now made in China, and all of them said "Made in Japan."

Even the Japanese companies, many of which were top notch at one time, are now taking advantage of the cheap Chinese labor!
