Anyone know for sure who makes the conventional supertech oil at Walmart? I searched the archives and a couple of people speculated that it was Quaker State. I checked the specs and it appeared that the Supertech actually met more specs than the Quaker State. Anyway, it's quite inexpensive at just over $4 per 5 quart container.

Anybody using this oil?

I've used it quite a bit in the past before I was "converted" to synthetic. I never had a problem at all with it. The reason I used it was due to a report from some lab that was published in a Popular Mechanics magazine several years ago that compared conventional motor oils. The bottom line of the report was that when the oils were rated the same, there was basically no difference in the performance regardless of the brand and hype. I know several guys who have construction businesses and they have used the Wal-Mart oil exclusively for years and have had no problems. I'd bet heavily that if you keep up with your changes as required, you'd be fine.

John,

I have avoided Walmart private label oil ever since the used oil collection franchise driver told me they cleaned it up and sold it to Walmart for their house brand. Its probably OK but why take the risk for a small savings?

I just put some in my buddys old plow truck (never leaves the property) It didn't say anything about being recycled on the package.

I don't know who makes it, but I run it in my truck.
I also use the SuperTech hydraulic and transmission oil in my gear drive tractors.

Looks good on both until you get to Ca, P, Zn. As with any oil, the diesel has a better addtive package. One has moly in it, holly cow! For the price and short drains, it would be fine. Typical group 1 oil.

I doubt that this is true. I would not think that it could have an API label on it or be sold as new if it was recycled oil.

The bottom line on all oil is use something at least as good as the manual says. If it says "use API CI4 15w-40" and the bottle displays the API CI4 symbol, you're good to go, no matter what brand it is. Will you be using the absolute best oil? Probably not--but it will be plenty good enough. There reaches a point where 'good enough' is just that...good enough.

You can't beat the price on it as a 'flush' oil.

Whenever I get a new piece of equipment, I always do a complete fluid change instead of relying on what the owner told me. On particularly old or dirty engines, I'll do multiple changes in short intervals, untill I get 'clean' oil out of it. My JD-B was like this. The first 2 weeks I had that tractor i bet i did 5 oil changes on it.. ( the 5th being the one that stayed in it ).. I used the supertech oil based on price. So far looks decent...

Well that's encouraging. Seems like everyone thinks it's o.k. As for the possibility of it being recycled oil, I don't think so. I checked the package carefully and can't find anything stating that it was other than new oil.

Regardless of the type of oil I use in my vehicles, I just can't seem to feel good about running them longer than about 3500 miles on an oil change. That included a little Dodge Neon we had that I used only Mobil 1 in. So an oil that needs a shorter drain interval probably is the best choice for me. I did spend an extra dollar to get a filter with better filtration and drainback valve, so I'm not a total cheapskate. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I still use Mobil 1 for really demanding tasks. For example, I have a 4-stroke outboard (Merc 40 efi) that is specced to run 6k on the tach wide open. I use Mobil 1 in it and am very glad I had it the other day. My thermostat stuck closed due to a lot of debris in the water and the motor got quite hot . . . 195 on my temp gauge. It normally runs 145 max. Having no other choice, I limped back to the ramp at idle, shutting down periodically as the alarm sounded and the temp spiked over 200. I made it, but was very concerned. I actually had to pull the thermostat, as backflushing didn't help. I also drained the oil, which was VERY dark, unlike the last change where it came out looking like it did when I put it in.

The motor runs fine now. I'm pretty sure had it been a two stroke that the ending wouldn't have been so happy. I'm also pretty sure that the Mobil 1 saved my butt that day.

I also use Mobil 1 in a small Honda water pump I use a LOT. I think it only holds 3.6 oz, so it's not a big deal either way. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
