Our 28 year old garage door recently broke another spring. It is uninsulated and been kind of funky for a while so we decided to get a new one.

I got a couple estimates and decided to go through Home Depot. Got the order all configured and they charged my card for the $3391.00. Then they sent a guy out that said my old 2x4 framing would have to be upgraded to 2x6 per the new codes. HD called me back and wanted another $267.00 which I agreed to and let them charge me for. A few days go by and i get a email saying the estimated delivery date to the installer is August 17. Complete with a notice that is NOT when it will get installed. 3-1/2 months they want to hold my money while I wait for someone to schedule the install date sometime after the door is delivered to them. If anything went wrong with the order I would be past the window to have my CC intervene. I told them to credit my card ASAP.

I just contacted another installer that told me the typical wait time is 6 weeks for custom orders. Waiting on a quote from them.

"They charged my card for the $3391.00" ....HUH ???
Gold plated garage door opener?

You can't do it yourself?
I am 80, and replaced mine (from Home Depot) last year.

Check several garage door suppliers. There was a large spread in delivery times when I ordered mine. Found what I wanted with a 4 week wait.
Paid substantially less than that for a 9x12 insulated. Installed myself.

All of the big box stores have turned into Walmart. Their contractors are almost always garbage, just like the products they sell inside.
Ask around, drive into a new neighborhood under construction if there is one near you.
A friend of mine swears by a website/app called next door. Ask some young folks for help if needed.

That is one of those situations where the original intention is to contract the work changes to," I am going to see if I can do this myself". A little bit of price gouging there along with a crappy schedule for installation.

Not for an opener. I bought a new opener I plan to install myself. That price is for a 18x7, 2" thick, R-18.4 door with insulated windows. The price is competitive for what I ordered. The 3-4 month wait for something they charged me up front for is my beef.

DIY wouldn't save me the wait time either not to mention I don't want to install the door myself.

Long wait times seem to be the norm. When I was looking for a grapple, one manufacturer with a cult-like following wanted 50% down up front with a 3 month wait time... and that was before COVID. Instead I ordered another less desirable(?) brand for the price of that down payment, and was using it in a week. When I was looking at bandsaw mills this spring, Woodmizer seemed like my best option but had an 18 week lead time and wanted the full price up front. By going through my local* dealer I was able to order with a reasonable down payment, plus I saved shipping costs. That scored brownie points with me as it seems to encourage supporting their local* distributer.

Oh sorry!
I completely misread your post!
I would not want to install a new garage door either!
WAY too old to even think about that!

Goodness. Is this the new order consumers have to endure?

Pay upfront - wait wait wait?

Everything Attachments has always asked for payment up front!
They have had lengthy backorders for several years now.
