Why when you go over 299,999 miles, does the odometer reset itself?

Right now my VW has 84 miles on it, but I can assure you, it doesn't look brand new:D

My first thought was sell it quick since the car is no a low milage vehcile! You will get top dollar.:D

When is your next emission and/or safety inspection? You might have a problem with the odometer is showing that kind of milage on a 24 year old car.

Might want to check the rules on this so you are not surprised at the next inspection.

Later,
Dan

The last 100,000 miles the check engine light has remained on;)

Bought the car in 2001 with only 24k on it (it's a 97).

I was wondering about the title though and what problems you may have with the "listed" odometer reading (thinking that with a digital readout, I was under the impression that you couldn't "roll" the odometer back).

In NH, the titles have a box to check stating mileage exceeds mechanical limits, or something to that effect. Maybe your does as well.

Not if you have a 6 didget odometer, not including tenths. Odometers can break and are independent of the speedos, i e you can have a speedo that works and an odometer that doesn't or works only once in a while. The speedo head/dash cluster can be replaced with a new or used unit. The old milage is supposed to be noted on a DOT sticker stuck in the doorjam or glove box when swapping out.

You didn't say whether your car's odometer has an electronic digital display or the mechanical rolling digits type.

This is the perfect question for "Click and Clack" on "CarTalk" on public radio:

"Wanna ask Click and Clack a question on the air?
Call 1-888-CAR-TALK (888-227-8255)"

They'd love this problem. If you've never listened to their show, at first you'll probably be put off by all the laughing they do, but you get used to it. I guess laughing is pretty essential when dealing with car problems. They never humiliate the callers, but they do sometimes (usually) joke around with them.

They have a website. I know a bit about cars, physics, and math, and they're really good at asking questions and then diagnosing problems. In my location they're on public radio (usually low frequencies like 90.9MHz on your FM dial) on Saturday morning at 10am EST.

Go on....call them... :) I'll be listening next Saturday.
