I just picked up one of these and believe it was made in late 70's to early 80's. All the information on Stihl site refers to newer units. My question is, mine came with saw blade cutter and Stihl refers to a "limit stop" when using this. I cannot get a good look/idea of what a limit stop is. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Okay buddy, after digging thru my old OE manuals.....this is the best that I can come up with.

Under the discussion of the use of a Circular Saw Blade i.e. Scratcher and Chisel Tooth....the manual says......"remove the standard deflector (4 screws) and fit the stop on the clamp with the screws provided in the kit. The deflector should be remounted when the circular saw blade is employed for other use or when other types of cutting tools are mounted."

My model was a FS81 purchased in July 1987. With handle bar design, I call it a Brush Cutter versus a trimmer...but it did both.

I guess all they are doing is changing the deflector to accommodate the blade versus a string head. But I never saw a part actually listed as a "Stop Limiter"or "limit stop". It might have something to do with allowing the saw blade to rest against a small tree sapling....i.e. limit the directional force of the blade as a safety device.
Hope this helps.

Mike

Thanks, do you have any idea of what is a "stop". I'm trying to figure out just what that is.
It runs great even with one of those demonic TK carbs on it. It needs the air filter box, brush guard & new fuel lines. It 's worth putting a few bucks into.

Best I can figure is the "stop" is the shape of the special design of the saw blade deflector that allows the saw blade to "stop" circling around the small tree/sapling that it is attacking.....kinda like preventing a kick around or kick back that one gets when a chain saw bar in near the tip of a log.

Makes sense, just wish they'd have clarified it better
Thanks

It is a brace coming off the saws shaft in place of the plastic shield. You have a place to hook your weed trimmer up to the trunk you are cutting. Prevents kick back of saw. Usually mounted at 12 or 6 o'clock depending on your cutting style. Reminded me of a paint stirring stick.

Here's another question: I want to replace the grease in the gear head. Since I really don't want to disassemble it because of it age -bearings are smooth- I've yet to come up with a solution. It would be nice to flush out the old grease without leaving any solvent to contaminate the new grease. It appears that the old grease is a lithium base or water contaminated.
Any ideas??

I'd just grease it, run it a till gear box warm, re-grease it, and run it some more.....maybe 2-3 times. I know that it's not like a zerk grease joint...........it must have seals........but heck.....that's what I'd do anyway.

FS80 trimmers were still being sold per 2005 sales book.
