I'm always busting a valve stem on my fronts, any advice?
I have a idea of welding a theaded metal pipe on the wheel around the valve stem and capping the pipe. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks All!

Install very short valve stems, like ATV and UTVs have. That way there is no leverage

The newer rims come with a short piece of half pipe welded on the rim. Just take a length of pipe a tad bit longer than your stems. Then cut it in half lengthwise. Then weld one of the halves onto the rim.

1. NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. You will ruin the rims!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. do you have a death wish???????

Take the tires to a local tire shop that does tractor and truck tires and purchase short metal base stems and have them remounted with them and that will survive the abuse.

What are you doing, and where are you going to do all this damage? The short metal valve stems are what you need.

That will work fine, used a lot on logging equipment...

Check the offroad magazines... They have all kinds of stem protectors...
Weld them on will work fine... check the heavy equipment around your area, most will have something welded on the rims...

Very few will be killed using weld on protectors... and unless your rims are made of plastic or sculpted from butter... you will not ruin your rims by welding on them... KennyV

If your going to weld a piece of pipe around the valve stem hole the tire will at least need to be debeaded and something holding it away from the metal your welding and the stem will have to be removed or it will burn up from the heat long before you have to worry about the tire exploding.

If you do weld some pipe to it make sure you paint the wheels, both inside and outside well so it doesn't rust.

When I use to dirt track race we avoided metal stems because they have no give and snap off. I'm not sure if they would do better on a tractor or not.

Were you thinking I was going to do it with a inflated tire on?:confused2:
That's the first thing I thought of, thank you though for the warning, I could see someone just being absent minded and super focused on a new idea or something and doing that. Definately do not want a explosion to the face!

Just got that video to work.... gives me the heebe jeebees! Did you see how high the tire pressure got?

Very interesting thread as I have already knocked the valve stem off one of the front tires of the M8540, our GL5030 has protective tabs welded over the stems; kind of disappointed that wasn't carried over to the M Series.

Off roaders face this issue and have come up with alternate ways of dealing with it ...you can google appropriately ... or, here are two links with their advertising blurbs:

Surevalve (TM) The Valve Stem / Tire Valve For Off Road Use "The Surevalve has a subriminal valve core for maximum protection for your extreme off-road adventures. The outer valve stem is double sealed to prevent air, dirt, and water from penetrating and corroding the valve core. The valve stem is the weak link in the tire and rim assembly. When participating in extreme off-road activities you are at a great risk of severing your valve stem. The last thing that you want when you're in a mud hole is to get a flat tire due to a broken valve stem.
Amazon.com: Flush Mount Chrome Valve Stem System (Set of 4): Automotive "The new Flush Mount chrome valve stems are the perfect way to set your new wheels off. Unlike most valve stems that are very tall tall and stick out, these "Flush Mount" valve stems give a clean smooth look to your new wheels. These are perfect for use with highly polished wheels to smooth out the look of that ugly valve stem. They work on almost all aftermarket and factory wheels that require normal valve stems.

"With this unique design you only need one valve stem to air up your tires. To air up your tires simply unscrew the cap and screw in the valve stem. Then apply air like normal. When you are done simply unscrew the valve stem and screw in the flat cap for the ultimate look.
BUT, A READER ADDS: yeah those are nice until they start to leak at the grommet like any metal stem does eventually and you have to dismount the tire to fix it. They are also slow to air down through the "detachable stem" and take longer to air up when done. Also if you happen to lose the "detachable stem" you're screwed untill you get a new one.

I had the pipe welded on mine and screw the cap on. It works great. The best mod I've done on my tractor. We welded one wheel without taking the valve stem out. Just took the valve core out. It only takes two little tacks with the welding for it to stay. It didn't even melt the stem. The pipe won't hold water if it's not welded all the way round.

I like those flush mount stems but I could see the removable part getting lost. They should include a new tire chuck that doesn't require that stem or 4 stems so you have lots of spares. It would really suck if you had the stem in your tool box at home while you needed to put air in your tire while at your land 100s of miles away.

probably could find a way to attach it to your compressor hose/chuck, but that's a good point

I have been around this stuff most of my life. I have enough common sense to not weld a rim with a tire mounted, but I was completely unaware of the pyroalasys thing.

Learn something every day, if you keep your ears and eyes open...........
