I had my motor rebuilt and all is going well except now I have oil coming out of the exhuast manifold. I had the cylinders machined and one sleeved, new pistons and rings. I am guessing the valve lash needs to be adjusted. Before making any adjustments I thought I would consult with the experts on this sight since you guys were so helpfull during the rebuild.

Thanks,
Tod

A valve lash adjustment won't make a difference. Do you get the head rebuilt too? Are you sure it's oil coming out of the exhaust? I would think the engine would burn the oil and you'd see blue smoke. Are you saying oil comes out when the engine is running or shut off?

I had the heads rebuilt same time as the motor.

I know that oil is coming out of the exhaust because my exhaust piping broke just below where it slides on to the manifold. Get this, I had oil on the bolt heads of my hydraulic pump and I thought I must have buggered up the pump gasket when I put it all back together. I replaced the gasket and I still had oil showing up in this area. I gave the oil filter a twist thinking that maybe it was loose. No change. Then today my exhaust pipe broke just under where it slides onto the exhaust manifold and it was obvious that the oil I had been seeing was coming out of a small crack in the exhuast pipe and now that it is broke thru, I can see oil inside the pipe.

How many hrs since rebuild? Does it smoke blue when running?

No more than 30 hrs since rebuild.. I've noticed a little white smoke occasionally. Before the rebuild I had smoke constantly coming out of the bypass tube but I don't have any of that now. Maybe I've got oil getting past the valve guides.

At 30ish hrs it's not fully broken in yet, there could be oil getting past the valve guides, but if the heads were redone properly there should'nt be much oil getting past them. It should burn it if there's oil going through the guides (ever spilled oil on hot exhaust before?). I've heard of people leaving the exhaust valve seals out intentionally. It allows a small ammount of oil through to lube the guides. I doubt it's the guides/seals, white smoke usually means water/antifreeze but could be unburned fuel kinda white/grayish. Did they magnaflux the head to check for cracks when it was gone through? Any pics of the engine on the exhaust manifold side?

Sounds to me like "wet stacking" or "diesel slobber". Caused by cool operating temperature and the accompanying poor seating of new piston rings. Find some real work for it to do. You need to run the snot out of it for several hours.

Alright. I'm ordering my new exhaust pipe and then I'll run it up to 1600 rpm or so and run for a while. I've taken it easy (1100-1200 rpm) because I knew I had a weak exhaust pipe and didn't want to break it. Now that it will be replaced I'll crank it up and we'll see what happens.

I spoke with my builder today and explained what is happening. He suggested 3 things;
1. Rings not set yet
2. Broken ring(s)
3. Injector pump not timed right and what I am seeing is fuel oil

I took the exhaust manifold off to see which cylinder the oil was coming out of. It appears to be coming out of all 3. With this said, I wonder if the timing on the injector pump might be off. I had the injectors and the pump rebuilt just before the engine was rebuilt. When I reinstalled the pump I set the hash marks and tightened it down. Do I need to do more?

Put a load on it for a few hours, disc or hare would be ideal
