value of a beater 2N

I'm trying to determine an asking price for a 2N/9N for an elderly widow who wants to unload it. It was her college professor husband's toy for many years. She's a kindly old lady and I want to make sure she gets what it's worth.

It is quite rough. It was driven to where it sets 2+ years ago. No major leaks, radiator antifreeze has no oil blobs in it. No right fender, no grill, radiator a little green on the lower right corner, but no leaks, and fluid level where it should be. I'm sure engine is either free or can be made to turn easily. Left rear rim very rusty. Hydraulics unknown but suspect OK. PTO has been converted to modern size. Oval radius rods, Three spoke steering wheel. Three speed.

I sat on it but found it to be very uncomfortable compared to my 8N. Is it supposed to have floorboards like my 8N has? I found it awkward to get on and off.

Just need a ballpark number to help her out. I think she has a kid in mind as a possible buyer but she wants to get things going.

If tires are in fair condition and hold air, as is $1200. Bad rear tires, $900. Get it running, if everything works, add about $700 to these prices.

A complete, running, but rough over-all 2N w/ average tires brings anywhere from $1200 to $1500 here. I could line you up with a dozen at those prices before lunchtime. In average condition, complete, maybe $1800-$2000 TOPS. Extremely good condition, $2200-$2500.

Missing parts (fender,grill, running boards) , not running (even if you suspect it WILL run), unknown hydraulics, unknown clutch, ect, I PERSONALLY wouldn't consider anything over $300-$400 IF it has decent rubber. Bad rubber and you're looking at scrap prices. (I've got an 8N and a TO-30 Ferguson in simular condition as you describe in my sights @ $500 each, and I'm hesitating)

Get it running, make certain hydraulics/clutch/ect works, and decent rubber, maybe $800-$900.

You MIGHT find the occasional buyer who'd give more than it's actually worth.

In NE Kansas, $1000 to $1500 depending on condition. Like FWJ said, there's tons of them around this area and not in demand. A good friend has a 52 8N that his family bought new, it is perfect, 12 volts, power steering added. He was asking $3000 for it and it's still his, no takers.

I guess I will be the disenting opinion here.

So far.. what we have is a non running tractor.. With what You've said.. i wouldn't offer over 700$.. perhaps 900 if she was really straight.. UNLESS it ran. Complete, loose, non running parters go for 500$ all the time. You can find beat up but good running tractors in the 1000-1500$ range depending on the area... heck.. I just recently bought a good running but ugly hundred series for 1500$.. and it is 2x times the tractor a 9n is, with it's 172ci engine..

It would be to her benefit to get it running. it will no doubt, nearly double the price range I quoted.

Rotted rear rim will cost someone a few hundred bucks, and a new fender will be 100, grill 50.

Get it running..Points cost 5$ and a couple gallons of gas nearly 10$

No.. the 9n/2n did not have running boards.. they had foot pegs ont he caps that hold the ball ends of the radius rods. Ocal rods point to it being a 2N.. probably 1944+

You can test hyds by moving the 3pt lift lever all the way up, disengaging the pto ( lever towards tractor front ), and then sticking a screwdriver thru the pin hole on the pto shaft and spinning the pto by hand using the screwdriver... the pto shaft goes thru the belly pump... if the hyds are in 'good' condition, after about 4 spins, you should see the lift arms shudder.. then after about 15 more revoloutions.. they should be nearly max height. This is the quick and dirty way to test 8-2-9N 3pt lift without the thing running. If you want an even better test.. ballance on the 3pt drawbar, if present, or stand on a lower lift arm while you spin the pto so that you have a load...

Takes 15 minutes to snatch the distrib off, drop in a set of points, gap to .015, and then slap back in.

there are too many of these things around to command top dollar for a 'ran when parked' unit.. that is now an 'unknown'

Disenting? I'm thinking you might have missed the part of my post where I actually stated what I think this tractor is worth. I'm "offering" $300 to $400 tops for a non runner/parts missing/not all that valuable even in whole form tractor. I agree whole-heartedly that this ISN'T a significantly valueable tractor, nor worth taking a risk on. You can find cherry 2N's here for under $1500. This one ISN'T cherry by any stretch. With all the parts missing, and the over-all condition described, I quoted $800 to $900 if it was running. And that ALL depends on condition of tires. With junk rubber, I'm thinking scrap prices.

Yep, my bad.. I straight out missed that entire last line or two of your post with the lower value posted.

Yeah.. she will be money ahead to put 50$ of tune up parts in it if it really did run when parked, as that will likely make it a runner and double her money.
