I received a letter from VDACS(VA State Vet Office) asking for a report of what livestock we have. They also ask some business info. There is a cover letter with it. It says that 4,500 animal owners have already registered in VA.
Anyone ever see something like this?
We keep some laying hens but not very many. About 20. No other livestock.

I have heard a little about it, just around the stockyard cafe and of course take that for whats its worth. Folks say there are trying to get a National Animal Identification System in Place. (NAIS) strickly voluntary sign up, at this point.

Talk is they want every farm and every animal to become registered with a farm ID and so on! This should make a great conversation!!

Randy, this has been brought up on TBN before so you might want to search on NAIS.

I picked up a brouchure last year at the NC Farm Show. At this point I think its just a voluntary program and there is no enforcement to force you to divulge information. Having each animal registered seems really nuts when one starts talking poultry.

Its more than simply registering your animals. As envisioned every time a registered animal goes off farm you have to file a report. I also *think* that in some (all?) cases you have to file the report prior to moving the animal for USDA approval. Noncompliance would carry penalties. The more I read/learn about NAIS the worse it looks.

One of the goals of NAIS is to require notification for every registered animal that leaves the property it is registered on. If you take a horse to a show, you will have to notify some government official, send a steer to market, same thing. I understand this has been pushed by large stockyards and finishing operations, and guess what, they don't have to register. The reason given for this when it was first talked about was to be able to track any diseased animals.

They can already track some cow that came to a slaughter house from Canada, but they don't have a clue where 1/2 million illegal aliens are.

i still am undecided about sending this in. my chickens are free range so I guess they can get desease from wild birds.
my wife said that if I send it in and for some reason there is an outbreak of some desease that can be traced to chickens the state will come here and 'destroy' my chickens.
one of the choices for livestock is deer.....with as many deer as there are around here I have more deer than chickens.

As I understand it they dont have to register b/c theyre allowed to come up w/ their own protocol. Only operations over a certain size are allowed to go this route though.

:) The diff is a matter of will/desire.

To my knowledge theres been no substantive public debate on NAIS. I think if there was it would wind up dead. At any rate if it becomes fully functional as envisioned it will adversely effect the food supply in this country.

NAIS - Good idea, workable technology, poor marketing, and governmental involvement = political.

After a rather long period of absence, I'll return to wish all a Merry Christmas.

Audrey and I have sold the farm and are currently still looking for the right place in S.W. Iowa.

Months ago, I begged all here to inform themselves about two issues: NAIS and the Clean Water Restoration Act of 2007. Please do so, and get involved. I'm afraid if we don't act soon, Government will continue to grow, and the freedoms we take for granted will dissappear.

Best in the New Year, health and happiness (and a bit of rain for those who still so badly need it!). Hope your livestock fares as well as you do, and that your crops make.

Cheer, K&A
