UTV\'s Snow Plowing Capability

I am in the market for a UTV and am curious if anyone out there used their UTV for snowplowing. I would like to know the performance of blade and unit.

I have seen the RTV and Gator HPX but no one had a blade or could speak to the snow plow capability.

Thanks for your input.

P.S. - These UTV puppies can get expensive.

Re: UTV\'s Snow Plowing Capability

A lot of it depends on how much snow you get and what type of snow you get (dry versus wet). You didn't fill out your profile so we have no idea where in the country you are.

My neighbors uses a 4 wheeler to plow his snow and it is effective but requires him to push the snow before it gets too deep (seems to be a 4 to 6 inch maximum depending on conditions). Consequently in a large storm he may plow the snow twice if more than 6 inches is expected.

Much of any machine's ability to plow snow is based on the weight of the unit and the traction it gets, versus the amount of snow that the blade is grabbing. Many of us with tractors find we need to add weights to push snow. I switched to a snowblower on my tractors simply because we get a lot of wet heavy snow when it snows and that is much easier to blow than to push. I think most UTVs are actually fairly light in overall weight, so I suspect the larger units would be much better at pushing snow than the compact units.

There are a couple UTV/tractor hybrids that will allow you to use a snowblower attachement. Or a front blade if you prefer. Steiner's Utilimax is a single seat UTV/Tractor that will blow snow, mow the lawn, and carry a load in the cargo box. Price for the basic unit without attachements is about $14,500 (list price is more, but I was quoted prices below list). The Bobcat Toolcat is a larger much more deluxe unit, base price without cab, etc, is about $18,000+. The Toolcat is more capable. Both are 4 wheel drive. Both might be worth considering because both can also replace your tractor if you don't have a lot of heavy duty tractoring to do. Essentially you get 2 machines in one with either of these units so you only have one engine to maintain, etc. The cost of a small diesel tractor (even a lawn tractor) plus the cost of a UTV can easily be thousands more expensive that a basic version of these combo units. The Steiner unit would be a much better "mower" type tractor/UTV. The Bobcat unit would be a better tractor type tractor/UTV.

I haven't tryed it on my HPX but I have a front blade for my Gator 6x4 that works great for moving snow.

Re: UTV\'s Snow Plowing Capability

I have a Gator HPX 4x4 with the 72" blade. As others have noted it works well but its performance is highly dependent upon the amount and wieght of snow you will be pushing. It is a very useful tool for light snow up to 1-2 ft deep. Heavy or crusty snow deeper than 6- 8" will stop the unit pretty quick.

I have been looking for a snow blower attachment for some time (2-3 ft of snow in my area is not unusual) but have been unable to find one. If anyone is aware of such a product I would appreciate hearing about it.

Re: UTV\'s Snow Plowing Capability

On the HPX with 72" blade. Can you describe the JD lift setup for the blade? Is it an electric motor driving a hydraulic lift cylinder? The cargo dump option is setup this way.

It seems the HPX could use a central hydraulic system to drive all these options. Could also pave the wave for a power steering option.

Have not seen a snow blower option. It would be a nice option with the JD cab and heater? JD make a broom for the HPX gator. It has it's own gas motor. Sounds like the gator could sure use a front PTO to drive such options.

Re: UTV\'s Snow Plowing Capability

Yes it uses and electric motor and small pump driving a lift cylinder. As you have noted it is basically the same approach used on the dump option.

I agree, a central hydraulic system to drive all options would make sense and it would allow for a much needed power steering option.

The PTO would be perfect for me as it would allow me to use a blower when the snow is deep.

Don't get me wrong the HPX is exactly what I was expecting and it is extremely in the summer. However some additional versatility would make it practical in the winter.

Re: UTV\'s Snow Plowing Capability

I was looking on the Deere UK WEB site on Gators and found this clip on attachments.

--------------------------------

Other manufacturers, such as Logic Manufacturing of Hexham and TFM Engineering of Kendal, sell a number of specialist attachments to further increase the Gator’s versatility. These include seeders, sprayers, spreaders, trailers, line markers, snow blowers, containers and tool holders.

I briefly searched these companies on the Internet but didn't come up with the snow blower attachment.
