Today - after the pressure adjustment - I spent some time filling some low spots. My wife had some dirt delivered about 3 years ago. The pile had hardened and I was "attacking" it in 2nd range (always mow in this range). Yes I know the reasons why the low range will give you more torque but I simply forgot to drop it into low range until I bogged down a couple of times. I finished the digging portion of the job in range 1. Just a reminder of the extra power in range 1.

Yes. I have found the same. It also helps to keep the throttle opened up a bit so the hydraulics do not bog down. I keep the hand throttle set at some minimum level and then use the foot throttle to boost it up as needed.

The trade off is a low enough gear and range combination to allow you to load it up and then move off at a decent speed.

But if you keep it in a lower range and then shift between the low and high gear it works out pretty well, IMHO.
