Using a backhoe for small jobs

/ Using a backhoe for small jobs #22
As Eddie and a few others have said, there are more and less efficient ways to use the equipment.

Especially with a smaller, lighter machine that has limited traction (read CUT on wheels, as opposed to a 10+ton tracked hoe or a full size loader/backhoe), you often have more power than weight. Working the wrong way can throw you around alot. Use the weight of the machne and it's contact with the ground for you instead of against you.

Kind of hard to explain, but instead of pulling agressively toward you flat horizontally, pull diagnally up a slope - that helps pull the hoe down onto the ground, instead of sliding it along on the surface. Then you can clean up the final trench horizontally. If you try and dig with a lot of downward force (like you would dig with a shovel), you lift and bounce the light tractor. If your bucket has teeth, use those teeth like a rake toward you to break up hard pack, then it is easier to scoop up.

Think of using your arm to scoop ice cream from a carton.

Usually, your boom (the arm attached to the tractor) has more breakout digging force than the dipper (the arm attached to the bucket). Sometimes that helps determine the arc you need to use to dig...

Finally, it's gonna come down to practice and getting used to what you need to do. Imagine how the backhoe pieces need to move, then teach your hands how to make that work. You can practice picking up a towel or soda cans to get use to moving the backhoe around (use the teeth...) if you don't want to dig a bunch of holes.
