New Holland TC40DA
I am looking at tractors and right now the front runner is a used TC35D with 320 hours on it, hydrostatic transmission, 16LA loader, and tubed & filled tires. The dealer took it in trade-in and is asking $17,900 for it. I could get a new TC35DA new for $23,000 with basically the same stats. Is there any reason to pay the extra $5,000? I don't see any but though I would ask you all to see if there is any big improvements between the 4 year old D and the brand new DA. Are those two prices reasonable?

The main competition for the TC35D right now is a Cub Cadet 7360 shuttle shift with loader for $13,500. Is the hydro and increased lift capacity of the TC35D worth the extra $5,000 over the cub cadet?

I am planning on mowing about 40 acres once or twice a year, plus light to medium landscaping type activities.

Thanks!

Noobie, I think the price on the used tractor is way, way high. That tractor sold new for around $19,000. You are making a big mistake to compare new prices today to new prices four years ago. For example, I paid $21,900 for my TC45D in 2001 and it had an additional hydraulic remote that neither of the tractors you listed have.

I would not buy that TC35D for $17,900 and I wouldn't buy the new one for $23,000. I'd offer the dealer $15,000 for the used tractor and ask him to drop down to $21,000 or less on the new one. Otherwise, I'd look for a better deal.

I don't mean to put a damper on your planned purchase, but I think if you search this forum, you will find my numbers are fairly close to correct. Good luck with your tractor shopping. There are lots of quality tractors at decent prices for sale. You don't have to buy from a dealer who overprices his products.

Thanks Jim. I thought that the prices for this dealer sounded pretty high which is why I posted here. I definitely trust your numbers and coincidentally my wife said we should offer them $15k (and she wants a sunshade), so if you and my wife agree, it must be the right number. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There are some more New Holland dealers I can call to get quotes from, so I will start on that when they open back up on Tuesday. Thanks very much for the help.

Thanks,
David

David,
I bought a used tc35d a year ago last january with loader and filled tires for $14,500. It had 475 hours on it. Its been a great tractor with no problems since then. I don't know anything about the cub cadet, but I can tell you that the NH should meet and beat your expectations, and your biggest problem may be getting your wife to get out of the seat to let you use it.... at least thats been my problem. By the way, the hydrostat transmission is fabulous. So, if you can get it for $15k, I think you won't regret it.

Jim

Thanks Jim, those numbers sure will help me get closer to that $15k price that will make this one worth while. My wife is really getting to like the TC35D, so the better chance I have of convincing them to take what I think I can give, the happier my wife will be. I look at it tomorrow and I think I am going to offer them the following deal:
The used TC35D & loader, plus a 6' light duty brush hog, plus the fiberglass sunshade, for $16,400 delivered.

I think if we can get them to go for that, we will sign up for this tomorrow.

That sounds like a good plan. Don't be surprised if the dealer whines like a 4-yr old kid, but stick to your guns and your offered price. Good luck. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just got a quote from a Northern Oregon New Holland dealer for the TC40DA at $20,800 with the 16LA loader compared to $24,000 from the local dealer. That gives me a lot more confidence about sticking to my guns with the used '35. If the local dealer won't come down, then I am likely to head to Oregon and pick up either the '40 or the '45 (he has a bunch of '45s in stock and quoted me $2k more for the '45). Plus, Oregon doesn't have sales tax.

$2K more, to go from a 40 to a 45? Did I get that right? If so, that seems high to me, but I don't have the specifics. I say this because to go from a 3 cyl. TC-35DA to a 40DA is usually about $1300, and I can't imagine it being any more than that to go up one more notch, especially since your already into a 4 cyl with a 40. Maybe I misunderstood?

Here is my experience when I purchased my 2004 TC35A last November.

I live in Maryland and the local, about 3 to 4 miles away, NH dealer gave me a price of $17,900 for a TC35A with 16LA FEL and loaded R1 tires. I checked around at prices and that was about right for the area. I had looked for 2 or 3 months trying to decide between the TC33 models and the TC35A, using the one TC35A on the lot as the benchmark. The 35 had a deluxe 3PT hitch compared to the 33's standard 3PT hitch, which sold me on the 35. The deluxe is great to have when hooking up implements to it.

They sold the TC35A I used as a benchmark two days before I purchased. The salesman told him he could order a TC35A from the factory, which would take about two weeks to get, or he could sell me a TC40A on the lot for $1,000 more. That would be a TC40A with 16LA loader and loaded tires for $18,900. I decided to just get the TC35A and I have not been sorry yet. I have almost 60 hours on it and it has done everything I ask it to. The engine seems to just sip the fuel.

$1,300 more for a TC40 over a TC35 with the increase in the steel surcharge, and price increases may be about right. They may be trying to get rid of the TC40 stock also. I do not think that $1,300 to go from a 3 cylinder to 4 cylinder engine is out of line. Keep trying to work the price though.

The best of luck with your purchase.

The used TC35D didn't work out. I went in last night and looked at it and it all looked good so we sat down to talk price. I told him that because it was so close to the price on a new TC40DA that would have a warranty, 0% financing, etc, I could only pay $15,000. He seemed to understand that I knew the tractor was overpriced, but he said he paid more on the trade in and just couldn't go down any. He was really interested in the quote that I got on the new TC40DA and after calling his boss and whatnot, he agreed to match the price. So it looks like I am getting a new TC40DA. I hope I did OK on the price. Here is the deal:

TC40DA w/ R4 industrial tires, delivered, 0% financing, $20,900
Woods 6' cutter w/ slip clutch, $1,695
Tubes & fill tires w/ calcium, $270
Then all the misc extras:
Grill guard, Sun shade, tooth bar, about another $1,000

I'll probably go in and sign the financing tomorrow if it still looks good after I have slept on it.

Did I do decently?
