Ok i've been looking for a z turn mower for about two years now and suffering from both sticker shock and not wanting to have buyers remorse.

Yesterday I found a used 2005 Scag Turf Tiger with a liquid cooled Kawi engine and 280 hours for 6k.

Is that a good price? What should I look for when evaluating a used zero turn?

thanks in advance for answering my questions.

It's a tough call because you can buy some of the mid tier units new for that. My brother in law loves Scags. I bought used Hustler SuperZ about a $8K unit new for $2500 with a bad engine - just one season and seems to be doing pretty well. I think if I was looking at $6K I might check out the new with warranty residential units from Cub Cadet not RZT but Z force or Tank series or Hustlers Z series.

Or just thoroughly check out the Scag and go for it. I don't know the retail pricing on those.

that price seems like it is right on the money. Scag is a real fine mower and have not heard any complaints on them. If this deal does not work out try looking for used exmark's or gravely's. Those are both real good mowers. just don't do what alot of people do and buy the box store brand zero turn's because thy are absolutely wothless lojng term. a few other good brand's are Hustler, and Grasshopper. Good luck

I bought a Bad Boy Pup a couple of weeks ago, it is a great machine, $6,500 new. I went with the 52" deck, I was going to get a 60" but I am glad I got the 52" now, just fits in some areas of the yard.

How are those mowers. Ijust recently saw them on the web and have not seen any in my neck of the woods.....are they well built...do you like yours?

scag is the best.

i wouldn't buy a rider with less than 60"

get a hydro walk behind if going less than 60"

they are better on hills, soft soil and tight areas.

Well finding a "good" used commerical mower around here is like trying get the folks in the middle east love one another. I asked several dealers over the past two years and they would chuckle and say that people dont trade in their used mowers until they are just beat to death.

The Scag Turf tiger is, I think, their stoutest model. My friend paid 9400 for his with tax three years ago. Also, this is the brand that I see the vast majority of lawn pros drive around with on their trailers. The belts and deck seemed to be in good shape other than some superficial rust from use. I talked the seller (a kid really) down to 5900 and he sharpened the blades and delivered it last yesterday afternoon.

It usually takes a little over an hour to cut my backyard and i did it yesterday in about 40 mins first try. So far i'm loving that and will not forget ear plugs in the midst of my excitement during the next mowing session. These mowers are loud with the blades engaged.

Congrats on the purchase, I think you will really like it. I am still getting used to my Bad Boy, only mowed twice so far. Have put a couple of digs in the lawn by turning too sharp, but am getting better fast.

The Scags are have a lot of heavy duty features, nice heavy decks, spindles and hydros. I like the liquid cooled Kawis, but I see a lot more air cooled units in use. Maybe 'cause the air cooled motors require a little less care to maintain. 280 hours is low for that machine. The price seems reasonable to me.
