Hi,

I have been looking for a first tractor for a couple of months now and I just wanted your input as to whether the deal I found is a good one or not.

I found a 1998 JD 4100 with loader, back blade, ballast box, and 54" belly mower for $9125. It has 480 hours and appears to be in pristine condition. I plan on going to see it first hand tomorrow.

This will take care of 5.25 acres. About 3 acres of Bermuda pasture grass and roughly 2 acres of Bermuda lawn. Also the 1/4 mile gravel drive.

I already talked him down from $10k.

Thanks in advance!

That price sounds really good, you can check tractorhouse and machinefinder to see what other are selling for also.

I forgot to mention that it is a gear transmission also.

Should I worry at all about it only being 19 hp? Seems like all the newer subcompacts have in the mid 20s now.

I plan to use it to do some plowing and tilling for a reasonable sized garden in the spring in addition to scraping the driveway, mowing, and doing some light grading in the back yard.

$9,125 sounds like a good price considering the hours and that it has a gear transmission which seem to be worth a bit less than a hydro.

I just sold my 2000 4100 Hydro with loader and 54" mid mount mower with 285 hours for $11,000. Always kept inside and still looked new.

The 4100 is a nice machine and I think 19HP will be fine for what you plan to do with it. In 11 years of ownership, other than regular maintenance, the only thing I had to replace was the battery.

Wow, sharp looking machine:thumbsup:

I hope you realize that at least the loader was repainted, those are the wrong decals and the lines where not painted when I was new. Seems odd that someone would go through the trouble to do that?

Don't wory about it being a gear transmission, Bro...Hydros are just for guys too uncoordinated to shift gears (Hee Hee Hee!!)

Yeah, he repainted the bucket and the loader arms and touched up the hood. He didn't get the color quite right on the loader either but it looks pretty good. We went over every inch of the machine for about 2 hours before I bought it. Spent about an hour putting it through it's paces and teaching me how to use it.

He also gave me extra air filters and a new belt for the deck, some lightbulbs, and all of the manuals.
