Still trying to decide what to buy to take care of our new house on what is currenty 4.5 acres of dirt. I fear that I am beginning to get that whole "paralysis by analysis" bug, as I have been "trying to decide" for several months. I have been talking to both JD and Kubota dealers and they are probably getting tired of me.

Nonetheless, I just learned of a used BX2200 at a local dealer. Here is the deal as I understand it with my limited (although growing) understanding of tractors. The tractor has 100 hours on it currently. A local guy bought the tractor from this dealer and after 45 hours or so, hooked on a tiller that was not made for the BX size 3 pt. and wrecked the "rear end" of the tractor, despite being advised by the dealer to cut the shaft. The dealer took it in on a trade on a new tractor and fixed the rear end. Since then, it has been used on the dealer's property adjacent to the shop, hence the additional hours. The dealer is now looking to sell for $7,350 with 60" MMM, or $9,500 with a new FEL and the MMM. I could finance at 7.29% for 4 years, but no warranty comes with the tractor. The dealer told me that they have had no problems since the work, but simply no longer need to keep the tractor around.

As an alternative, I can get a new BX2230 with MMM and FEL for $12,000, with 0% financing and a warranty. This would be from the same dealer.

Money is an important factor for me, although I am also leary of not having a warranty on my first tractor (even though a warranty doesn't protect me from myself!)

Any thoughts on my dilemma would be appreciated!

Lemme see...
$9500 x .0729 ($692.55) for 4 yrs = $12270.20 total
plus they will probably want some money down....

I know what I would do. Take the new one.
Just my opinion. Good Luck.

I just bought a new BX1500 about as cheap as I
could buy a used one with low hrs. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Neal:

Your math sure does make it seem like a no brainer. Thanks so much for the response!

I faced a similar dilemma. I bought the new one. I just got home with my new Kubota hat and T-shirt (comes with the new BX2230).

I paid $12,000 for the 2230, 60" deck and FEL. I also added R4 tires, a Kubota-brand ballast box and a front grill for an additional $330 total.

Keep in mind that Kubota has a $600 in rebates to get rid of the 2230's. We also got no payments no interest for 6 months (then we will throw it on our home equity line, and take the tax break on the interest). Both the rebates and the no interest no payments for 6 months end today.

One other advantage of new--warranty stuff. My dealer is 18 miles away (closest dealer--I live in the country). He told me that if my tractor needs warranty work, they will come and get, fix it, and then drop it back off, for free. I don't have a trailer, so this is a nice little peace of mind thing.

I only wish my tractor was ready (they just took it out of the crate this morning, so it still needs an FEL and some fit and finish. I'll get it next Tuesday. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I don't understand the math given above... Let's say that you put down 1k and finance 8,500. That makes your monthly payment 204.69 (Principal+Interest). So your total is (48*204.69)+1,000=10,825.

But I'd still get the new one... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Joe's calculations are correct, but I would stil go with the new tractor.

the 0% is probably for only 36 months, where the interest earning payment is for 48. That will make a big difference in the monthly investment.

Warranty is worth a fortune, especially if the cost of the tractor sort of taps you. If you break something EXPENSIVE and have no warranty, your tractor may sit a while.

Regardless of the math, sounds to me like the concensus is that a new tractor (with warranty) is the way to go. I am sure all of you are right, but it was the cheapskate side of me rearing its head. I do know that with my luck, I would get home and the whole back of the tractor would fall off. I am sure I wouldn't hear it from my wife if that happened...

Hopefully I will make up my mind and take the plunge soon! Thanks again everyone.

If you finances the the used one at full price with no money down, your payment would be 228.77 a month with a full payback amount of 10,980.95. If you financed the full price no money down on the new it would be 333.33 a month with payback of 12,000. I would recommend from personal history going with new. You might just end up with one big white elephant with the used one.

Oops, I was obviously typing faster than I was thinking....

Bottom line, I wouldn't touch a tractor that had major internal work without a warranty unless the price was really really good. Kubota's financing on new ones is hard to beat.

If you figure the new one for 48 months it would be $250.00 per mo.

In my opinion, it would not be a question which way to go. You would be paying $1019.05 for a new tractor with warranty and it would probably be worth more if you sold it.
