Still looking
Long time lurker. Have looked at BX23. I need a machine that can do some fairly light regrading (needs to be able to cut trails in greenbelt that abuts my property) Some small stump pulling but mainly moving dirt and clearing brambles, small trees (6" to 8" dia). I was cruising in my neighborhood today and saw this machine for sale. it is 4X4 with FEL and 4 ft. box blade, also has 4ft tiller. Shows 500 hrs on machine. Asking $9,200. Two questions: Can it do the job (16 hp) and, is this a good price? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new machine. This site is awesome. Thanks in advance.

John, I don't know how old or which B7100 that one is or which FEL, but if everything's in good condition, that price sounds about right; not too high, but not a low great bargain either. I bought a new one in '95 with the B1630C FEL for $10,850, but then a 40" Bush Hog tiller was $1,300. I don't remember exactly what I paid for the 4' Monroe Tufline box blade. And in '99, with a little over 400 hours on it, the dealer gave me $8,000 for the tractor and front end loader when I traded up to a B2710. For clearing brambles, moving a little dirt, and tilling a garden, it's a fine machine. The biggest drawback to me was the lack of power steering. That makes it a little hard to turn, especially at very low speeds with a load in the FEL, but certainly not an insurmountable problem. As to whether it can pull 6" to 8" trees, it depends on the kind of tree and kind of soil, but likely cannot pull them out of the ground. You can spin the wheels, but it may not have enough traction to do that. I see that your profile lists a fairly small place, so you just might be very happy with that little tractor. I was working 10 acres, plus a lot of work on my brother's 10 acres, so after 4 years I traded up to the B2710.

OK, thanks. Great point re: the power steering. Also, because of the situation that I have here, I had originally thought that I should get a back hoe with my tractor. The BX23 has one, but this machine does not. Thought I would need the bh to help get those stumps up and to help terrace this patch of land. i ultimatley want to make trails that i can maintain and then give my grandkids rides etc. At the same time, if this is just the machine I need and at a good price, I dont want to miss it. Anyway, thanks very much for your input. Appreciate it very much.

Not a great deal, but theproximity helps. If you have already been looking at a BX23, I would go that route. I now have 20 hours on my machine and it is a well balanced, and proportioned machine. You will have a ball with it, it transforms the mundane into the exciting.

John, the last time I talked to my ole' dealer, he said he'd sold my B7100 3 times after I traded it back to him. He said a woman bought it for her husband (I forgot whether he said a birthday or anniversary present), but after just a few months, they came back and traded it back in for a new tractor with power steering, then he sold it to a rental company, but it wasn't long until the rental company traded it back in for a new tractor with power steering, and he'd then sold it to another couple and was waiting to see whether they'd want to trade it back. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And he said it still only had 700 hours on it and not a thing wrong with it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ive got a B7100HST. It has 2200 hours on it. Over half would be loader work. The lack of power steering is character building to say the least.

Seems like a tough little tractor as mine has been put to the test quite often. 6-8 inch trees may be a little optimistic but depends on the type of root system and how much time you got. Pictured a shallow rooted poplar I dug up.

No idea as to pricing.

Thanks for that great info Bird. I think I'll take a pass on this one. It does look like a nice little machine but I dont want to have to fight the steering wheel all the time. What do you think of the BX23?

I think you would like the compact size and power of the bx23 for your size of property. I have three acres of land I am clearing and it pulls stumps rather well. Here is a link to some pics of some stump removals I have done with it. I am in noerthwest washington, so we may have similar soil/tree types

You gotta watch because there are many variations of this model around. Without power steering, I would say $7000 tops. We sell them on trade for 3-4000 w/o loader regularly.
