I'm going to be looking for a 5 or 6 foot brush hog to run on my John Deere with 30 PTO HP.
Its duties will include over grown field work where the vegetation will consist of briar bushes, saplings and other goodies you may find in these untended pastures and fields.
So looking for something that will do a good job and hold up to the rough conditions. I won't abuse it but the conditions could be tough!

What would be the top 3 brands/models you'd recommend I look for? I don't need the most bad ass - built like a tank one but just something that will be reliable and hold up.

I appreciate any advice, opinion and comments.

I have 2 Brush Hog SQUEALER SERIES ROTARY CUTTERS one five foot and one six foot. I run the 5 foot on a 32 hp Kubota and 6 foot on a 50 hp Kubota. They have been beasts and eat up most anything I throw at them. I would highly recommend a slip clutch.

I like to older Brush Hog equipment in that I think they were over build and sturdy IMO. To me the key is to get one that you can get parts for. A lot of not well know brands are hard to figure out where to find parts. Some are easy to find some not so much.

I have been running a Woods 60" medium duty rotary cutter for several years now on my Kioti CK4010, and its been highly reliable. Its capable to over 3" thick brush. Easy to find parts and has a very good slip clutch. While researching the Woods, i found Landpride and Bush Hog have well built rotary cutters, with a good parts supply available. For your 32Hp at the PTO I think your mainly going to be relegated to the 60" light and medium duty cutters. Don't over buy on rotary cutters, and get something just too big for your tractor. Because, you will be constantly overheating on warm summer days.

I would have a Brown. If there were any dealers in this neck of the woods.

I looked at Brown Rotary cutters and loved them. Absolutely beautiful cutters, all American Made, heavy guage steel, extreme duty gear boxes. They are expensive and well worth the money. But you need a minimum of 60hp at the PTO to run these cutters.

Correction: Brown does sell a 60" 410 series cutter requiring 30hp.

The two most effective sales tools ever invented are the expiration date and horsepower recommendations!

This is my personal observation - trying to find a particular brand used, in good shape won't happen quick. And if you want to step up to "medium duty" (2"+ capacity) it may be a long term search. I suspect the most widely available + build quality are Woods, and Bush Hog. Consider weight and condition as the primary factors versus brand.

Thank you. I figured from experience that it will take time to find a "deal". My hope is to narrow the search for specific brands!

Bushhog 286 6’ has been a great. Over 25 years of being beat to he!! Still cuts well but about wore out deck. Couple of oil changes, many blades and bolts, magnet on gearbox. Original driveline and seals. Thinking about getting a Brown 416. Should be my last one I’ll ever need.
