Hello,

I have a couple older tractors that have oil leaks. My Dad purchased some Lucas Oil Stabilizer for a garden tractor transaxle. It had a leak... after adding the Lucas Oil the leak has slowed significantly.

What is your opinion on using Lucas Oil Stablizer to slow/stop leaks? Any real world experiance? I'm thinking of adding some to my tractors.

Thank you :D

My neighbour uses the Lucas motor oil additive in a Corolla with mega miles - seems to help in his case.

My experience with Lucas is with their Power Steering additive (I use their thicker version, Stop Leak) - works pretty well on what I've used it on (rack/pinion).

Check the MSDS sheet if you are more curious about what is in it, I suspect that most of the Lucas products have a dose of seal sweller in it - helps soften and expand old seals - as long as they are not physically damaged/torn, should reduce the oil loss through the seal.

I felt I got my moneys worth+, on the PS products.

Thank you for your reply!!! You are the first to respond... I was beginning to think I was breaking new ground here. Sounds like it works.

I just put some in my Allis Chalmers B... we'll see how it likes it. Next tractor to get it is the Ford Golden Jubilee. I'm hoping the maintenance man in a can approach will reduce the oil leaks.

Thanks again!

I use Lucas products in my 67 442's oil and gas, I also use their gear lube in my 4 speed tranny. My son runs their gas additive in his Celica and sees better gas mileage with it in the tank.

Good products and they have a great rep among the muscle car crowd. Not sure if that helps you thou.

No problem Papa, I've picked up lotsa good info here - glad to return the help.

I have been using Lucas gas treatment too (/Upper cylinder lube). Old but decently maintained 4 banger w. stick shift - I can notice the difference in how it runs, and it has quietened down some fuel pump noise (knock wood) in another vehicle. I've taken to pre-mixing it with gas in a pyrex measuring cup - the first time I tried putting it my tank was wintertime - really thick at those temperatures, messy and hard to pour.

Mechanic whiz I know was explaining how the alcohol in the gas changes the fuel burn time/propagation - I think this Lucas stuff helps the older cars deal with this popcorn fuel - their 'puters or elec/mech ignitions weren't designed for this $ transfer to certain lobby groups....

I've used Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak in my Volvo rack & pinion. At first I didn't know where the fluid was leaking from, but the stuff certainly slowed it down. Turned out there were pin-holes in the steel lines and the increased viscosity slowed the leak. (The stuff has the consistency of STP, like thick syrup.) Eventually the leak became a gusher, so I drove with manual steering for 3 months until I located a used rack and the weather was warm enough to do the swap. These "snake oils" do work for a while, but aren't a permanent solution.

Agreed Yellr, if you have an actual hole in a hydraulic line, the only real fix is to to replace it.

Where the Lucas Stop leak seems to work the best is on seals. If the car has sat for a long time, or the seals are just old/hard, it can help a bit.

Volvo used to sell those steel lines for the RWD racks for a reasonable price. That helped people keep the cars on the road too long, so they yanked the price up quite a bit.

Sometimes I think the Mennonites are the only smart ones amongst us. Horses rarely need hydraulics fixed, and there is nothing on their wagons they can't fix themselves.

I like the Lucas fuel treatment product and use it regularly. I tried the oil to help with a drippy main seal on a Honda generator years ago, did nothing. Also tried their stuff for seals in a hydraulic system that had a leak, no luck there either.

I have a 30hp 4x4 tractor that was leaking in the front wheel seal. It would leave a 10" spot on the floor after using it. I was told to use Lucas Hub Oil and it may stop leaking. Not wanting to tear it down and the fact that it is a Grey Market tractor with difficult to get parts. I drained all of the remaining gear oil and added a quart of Lucas Hub Oil. Next time I used the tractor, No change. 2nd time there was only a 3" spot on the floor. 3rd time, Nothing, No more leaks. Been that way for 9 months. Try it, I hope it works for you.
