With 4-WD engaged, front wheels turn 4% farther than rear wheels. This is called "slip" and it enhances front wheel steering. That is why 4-WD tractors have knobby front tires, for grip.

2-WD tractors do not ordinarily have knobby front tires, they are grooved around the circumference.

If you engage 4-WD on hard surfaces the front tires wear relatively rapidly. Accelerated front tire wear on hard surfaces is the only downside to operating in 4-WD.
