URrrggghhhh Broke steering cylinder JD 4310

I broke the hydraulic steering cylinder one hour in to my "work weekend.
JD dealer says the cylinder is $450.00 to replace. Can I use a generic cylinder? How long should it take to replace the cylinder and straighten the tie-rod assembly? Help!!!!!!

Gawd, that sucks. Been there, though.

With about 30 hours on my Kubota, while cleaning up an OLD burn pile, I wrapped a piece of bailing wire around the rear axle. Shredded the seal. Cost to repair, right at $400, if I remember.

If your cyl rod is bent, have it straightened. Your seals may not even be
damaged. Also, consider having a hyd shop replace the rod if it can
not be straightened. $100-200, depending on where you are. Another
option is a buy a generic welded cylinder near the size you need and
have is modified to your length and stroke. $100 for the cyl and $100
for a shop to do the shortening.

As for the tie rod, that can be straightened, too. A tie rod for my
Kioti is $50. For your JD, prob $100+.

I don't know how JD set up the steering on your tractor, but most steering systems use a special cylinder. A generic one may fit and make the wheels turn, but it will have different force when you turn left vs right because of the area of the rod impacting the total force. A steering cylinder has the packing in the middle of the rod, so the force is equal when turning left and right.
