Sorry for the "urgent" post, but I need a couple of questions answered quickly so I can jump on a possible deal tomorrow.

Tractor is a John Deere 650. 1600 Hours. Cranks, but won't fire - says not getting fuel.

What ALL should I look for/at?

I can get the tractor for $1,500 and maybe even $1,000 if I just show up with cash.

Would this be a fuel issue like an injection pump, injectors, or even something simple such as needing a filter or being primed?

Or could it also be low compression and thus needing rebuilt?

If so could I have it rebuilt for around $1,500?

I'm thinking this tractor cleaned up with everything in working order is worth around $4,500 where I live.

I would then possibly keep it or sell for some quick cash.

Thanks a ton!

If it’s not getting fuel. Check the tank. See if it’s nasty fuel or dirty at bottom of you can. Check fuel filter. Make sure your getting fuel to filter. Check transfer pump to filter. If good move on down the line and see where else your getting fuel. Pretty easy to diagnose no fuel issues with these older tractors. Good tractors of running. I’d buy it even tho it’s not running for $1000

Appreciate the quick reply!

Yes, definitely my thinking on the $1,000. I'm used to working on my YM1700 which does not have a transfer pump, just injection pump. Where is the transfer pump located?

He also mentioned no smoke while cranking.

If it does have transfer pump it will be bolted to block. Probably runs off of the cam to turn the plunger. I used to work for deere couple months back but now am a supervisor for Caterpillar. So I can’t get into deere to tell you exactly.

At 1600 hours I doubt low compression, it would need three to four times the hours for that. Also no smoke when trying to start, equals no fuel.

For a grand I'd buy it and sort it out later. All these deals have some risk though. If it's just a simple fuel problem you would think someone would have already fixed it. Maybe they just ran it out of fuel and didn't know how to bleed the system. One can always hope.

I know it, I'm torn. I'll go look at it and if it seems like a fuel issue, bite the bullet and buy it.

If lucky, you can get a gut feeling from looking around the sellers yard if the seller is mechanically inclined.
Are they the type of person with everything new, or are selling it for their deceased great uncle, not a tool box to be found anywhere, etc..? This is a lot different than if they have a hot-rod, or a rock climber parked next to it, with a welder and a 27 drawer tool box, for example, sitting in the corner, etc...
This may answer the question of did they not just fix "easy problem" themselves because they don't know how, or don't want to be bothered, or learn; or do they know something else about it that they're not telling?.
