I purchased a new JD 790 in 2006 with a 300 FEL. It's been a great machine for me for the past couple of years. I have been wanting to upgrade to a more capable machine for my acreage. We use round bales for our horses and most of them weigh between 1,100 up to 1,500 lbs. My little 790 can push them across the ground to get them moved around the propety but it won't lift them at all.

I just came across a used 2001 JD 4600 MFWD HYDRO with 460 FEL with approx. 200 hours on it. I am having a bit of a hard time finding the lifting capacities of the FEL and 3pt for this combination. I believe that it is a 43 horsepower machine. I know it will be a lot more capable than my 790.

They are asking $18,500 for the package deal and are working on numbers for trading in my 790 towards this unit.

If anyone can provide me with some specs on this tractor and if this is a good machine or anything to look for in particular - I would greatly appreciate it. :)

The loader is rated at 2325 lbs at the pivot pin @ max hieght there,s another rating at 59" hieght that I dont have which I know is considerably higher. The 3pt is rated at 2500 lbs 24" behind link ends. These are both triple what your 790 is rated at.

Looks like a real clean, low-hour tractor. Also appears to have rear axle spacers, too. The rear wheels are spaced quite a distance from the fenders. That's a VERY GOOD thing to have if you're gonna be lifting and hauling those big round bales!!!! :D

Got the standard duty front bucket, too... Kinda wimpy - but nothing that some good 2" and 4" wide x 3/8" thick flat steel welded along the top edge and the side edge of the bucket won't cure!

Mother Deere (Frontier) makes a real sweet bucket grapple that would make those bales easy prey for the 460 loader, too. Make that 4600 look like the little brother to your neighbor's 6230's and 7320's with those bale grapples on the front loaders. 'Course the cheapest option is a new bale spear - but what fun is there in that...? ;)

You might want to also talk with your dealer about maybe throwin' in the rear ballast box as well. You're gonna need some help on the rear of the tractor whenever you're haulin' those 1,200 lb bales off the front of the loader! Unless you've got a 6' rototiller or a 7' HD box blade sittin' in the barn that happens to weigh 1,000-1,200 lbs.

Best of luck on your new tractor.

That is a real clean looking tractor but in looking at the pictures I have to ask what they want for the 3020 or 4020 behind the 4600 against the white wall?

I thought those tires look spaced out a bit! I even asked the dealer if this was normal or not. He said it looked fine to him but he didn't know much about it. Thanks for that info! Makes me feel better about it. I will be keeping my ballast box that came with my 790 for rear weight.

Not sure - but you can click on the ad to view all of their available equipment for sale. I found a 4010 - maybe that's what you were seeing?

And a 4250 also in the background:

Very nice looking machines but too far away from me. Don't want to mess with shipping.

I had a couple come look at my 790 yesterday. Drove it and everything. They had just got done looking/driving some 20 horsepower models and when they saw my 790 they fell in love with it. They even told me they were going to the bank tomorrow (monday) and if it works out they got my full name and everything to put on the cashier's check. So hopefully - my 790 will be sold and then I can go get that 4600. Thanks for everyone's comments and advice on it - I really hope it works out that I will be able to get it.
