I work in welding sales and maybe some others on here who also work retail have had a similar experience. A customer phoned and ordered a specialized cutting machine from Koike for $2100. They weren't on account but left a credit card number for a 10% deposit with the rest being paid when they picked it up. Fast forward and the machine came in. I called the number and it was apparently the wrong number so I carefully dialed again and got the same person who said he had nothing to do with welding. My supervisor said to just put the final payment through since we had the credit card number. I tried looking up the guys name and found only one name the same so left a message for them to call. I don't know if it's the right person or not but was going to wait a couple days to see if I got a return call. My supervisors thinking is that the CC statement will get sent to the right place so not to worry if the phone number given was wrong. I guess it's easy for someone to mistakenly give a wrong number or write it down wrong but in the back of my mind I'm wondering if perhaps the person decided they didn't want the machine after all? They'd be out $210 instead of $2100. I don't think someone would forget they ordered a $2100 machine and not call if they hadn't heard anything. Ever had people try to back out of a sale like this? I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time if it's true. The other person at the counter suggested waiting 30 days to see if the customer called about it but the supervisor said just put it through so I did. Have to wait and see if we get cursed at or applauded. LoL

Most likely scenario is they accidentally gave you the wrong number. They're going to call you in two weeks and cuss you out asking where their machine was and why you haven't called them to tell them the status.

Maybe a stolen credit card.

What happened to caller ID.

Next, he will send a third party to pick it up.

If it is on the up and up and the person backs out they will just dispute the charge and get it take off their card. If it is not you may begetting a call from the CC company sooner (stolen card # ) or later (stolen personal info to get a card). I know I check my statement every week so I would know if someone tried something.

Good lesson here. You really need to match up your card statements and recipts. I travel and several times monthly someone adds to the credit card transaction. Waitresses add a few bucks to the tip, Airport news stands bump up the transaction a few bucks, Cab drivers add to the fare after you leave etc. As for the OP, I'm sure Koike would take the machine back if you insist.

If you had a way to match up the call from the bill with the transaction time, then you could have something. Always ask for a 50% deposit too.

It would be a big help if where I worked had call display on the phone. Then you could double check the number that called. I was wondering if it's possible to contact the credit card company to see if they can let the customer know their machine is in or even better provide a phone number? I know that sometimes when you make a bigger purchase they contact you to check. Maybe the number I called to leave a message was the right person? When the guy ordered it he sounded legit so you would think he would call if he hadn't heard anything.

You can call the credit card's fraud department, and let them know the situation. They may not give out the customer info (for sure they wouldn't) but probably would contact the customer to verify and check...and maybe freeze the account. If they froze the customer's account, I am sure someone would be sure to respond.

Got it straightened out. The guy called and he had one number wrong in his cel. number. It turns out the number I called for the home number was the correct one but he hadn't got that message yet. He'll be picking up the machine in a few days.
