I have been reading a lot and trying to educate myself before buying. From what I gather Kubota and John Deere are the two main players, at least here in the US. They are not rebadged tractors so I guess that makes them better in some people's eyes. The other big manufacturer is Daedong and they make tractors that are rebadged and sold as Kioti, Bobcat, Case, New Holland,...more I'm sure. Oh, and I forgot about Mahindra. Not sure who makes those. Throw LS in the mix too as I've read they are very reliable also.

I don't know how you tractor guys keep up with all this!

All I wanted was a 28-38hp machine that would do some decent loader work, mow some, help me haul firewood. I only have about 5 acres of light woods, some hilly sections. I think, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I need something close to 3,000 pounds without any attachments. I wanted a pre-owned with no more than 500 hrs if possible with FEL. I'm fairly cheap so somewhere in the $12-16k range but don't want to buy anything that's gonna give me trouble.

Please help me understand the tractor world as it applies to my size of machine.

Hello one newbie to another- I just bought an LS J2030H (27hp-20 at PTO) for $14000 plus tax- I haven't put many hours on it but I trolled this site for quite some time and did other research- Most seem to agree its alot of tractor for the money- Comes with loader and I added a front mounted snow blower- the MMM ( I learned that here that means mid mount mower) is an additional 2800. All with a factory 5 year warranty- Hope this info. helps you out- good Luck

Not a complete list or in any kind of order:
Daedong owns Kioti and was rebadged at Bobcat (now discontinued)
LS is rebadged as New Holland and Massey
Mahindra makes some their own stuff, others are rebadged TYM or Iseki
Cabelas is a rebadged TYM
Deere makes some of their own, they also rebadge Yanmars
Cub Cadet was rebadged Yanmars (now discontinued)
Kubota makes their own

Yep. Daedong is the parent to Kioti.

This is a pretty good expression of your needs. You will need 12" or more ground clearance to work in the woods. I expect Evansville has at least three of the major brand tractor dealers listed in Post #3. Visit them and see if they respect you as you shop. Check out the service areas. If you get a good feeling, shop at those dealers for a new or used tractor.

If you do not see what you want used, shop the same brands throughout Indiana via eBay and Tractorhouse.com. so you have service and parts available, even though you may buy 100 miles away.

I really like my Kubota B3300SU tractor-loader package, $18,000 new. That is influenced by the fact I have an EXCELLENT two-man Kubota dealer six miles from my home, where they are always helpful, always glad to see me and fair, not cheap, on implements and service. The advice they have given me has been priceless.

Take your time. Fall and Winter are the best time to buy a tractor. Spring is the worst.

An FEL and four-wheel-drive are the two most useful tractor options, especially on an under 3,000 pound tractor.

You came to a good place for advice on what to buy. You mentioned needing something close to 3,000 lbs. My tractor weighs around 2,000 lbs. without attachments and I've had no problem doing some of the things you mentioned you want to do with your tractor. I've done a lot of loader work moving and excavating dirt, moving firewood, and moving stone and it's been a great machine for all of those tasks. At 31 HP I've also had no problem running hard and soft woods through a fairly large PTO chipper for a number of hours. During my research I learned that the new CUT market has many models to choose from but I'm not familiar with the used market.

Thought I'd help you clarify a few things....

Kubota - makes their own in Japan
Deere - has allegedly shifted towards making more of their own, but much is still rebranded Yanmar & others, some made in Japan, some India, etc.
LS - Made in S Korea, sells as LS, New Holland, Case, previously Montana & McCormick, FarmTrac
Daedong - Made in S Korea, Sold as Kioti, Bobcat, McCormick, Landini
Iseki - Made in Japan, builds Massey, used to build White, Challenger, Agco, etc ... apparently used to have ties to Mitsubishi
Branson - Made in S Korea by Kujke, division of Dong Kyuk Steel. To my knowledge no one else rebadges them
TYM - Made in S Korea by Tong Yang Moolsan corp ... sold as TYM, some Mahindra, and now Cabellas
Yahmar/Cub Cadet - Made in Japan, apparently in-house build.
Mahindra - Is starting to make their own (xx35 series is an in-house build, not sure on engine tho), otherwise they rebadge TYM & others, sometimes using Daedong engines.
Massey - See Iseki
Case-New Holland - See LS, also has models made in Japan mainly by Shibaura

Those are the major US players anyhow. I did a bunch of research myself when I was tractor shopping. Feel free to correct any of that info if anyone discovers it to be incorrect.
