Back before the days of Gore-Tex, everybody that I knew used bear grease to waterproof their leather boots. We used to buy it at K-mart but I doubt they carry it anymore. It works but has to be maintained.
Then I bought a pair of Rocky Stalkers when they first came out. They were kind of like wearing heavy socks with soles attached but didn't leak for a long time. My skinny feet moved around too much due to their lack of support. I now wear boots that lace almost to the toe and find them much more comfortable.
