Anyone rent a uhaul trailer to tote their BX24?

I don't have the need to buy a trailer, but would like to take my tractor to my cabin to do some yard work, once in a while. About 150 mi trip.

Any suggestions? Car carrier perhaps? I live in MA.

Rented from U-Haul 3 times to move B2400 with 60"mmm. Good experience with one exception. The trailer they had that sounded like it would let me drive on with mower was not actually that wide at the gate. Did not have a actual flat bed with no sides. Had to drop mmm, load tractor, then manhandle the mower up ramp and on by myself. Those things are heavy if you are looking at 72 years. Then of course had to unload same way and remount mower.

Also, might check with D.O.T. regarding tie downs, I blocked wheels, used straps fore and aft, was later told that Hiway Patrol would/could have stopped me, required chains for tie down.

Good luck.

My brother recently rented a Uhaul trailer to go pick up a tractor. It was a 14' tandem axle trailer with surge brakes. My impression of it was that it would have been a pretty good trailer for a BX, although the loader probably would have had to extend out in front of the trailer bed and rest above the tongue. It was not a car transporter; it had pretty high side rails and was all metal.

My only hesitation is that Uhaul seems to do a really lousy job maintaining their things. I've had problems with most Uhaul things that I've rented as have other people that I've talked to. So, if you do go with them, I suggest you inspect the trailer thoroughly before risking your life and property.

The rental was $35/day. Not bad at all.

I rented a U-Haul 6' x 12' utility trailer to move a BX24 about 120 miles last week. It worked out well but you are correct, the FEL will overhang the front of the trailer. I chained the rear wheels, blocked them and used 10,000# ratchet straps on the front. Lowering the back hoe stabilizers against the side rails took all the 'rock' out of the tractor.

I used some 5' 2x10's to make a ramp, blocked the middle of the ramp with some small concrete blocks just in case they couldn't handle the weight.

For $29.95 a day it was a good deal and did the trick. The surge (inertia) brakes worked well and the 1/2 ton Silverado had no trouble pulling it up the hills.

Hope this helps,

Jim

I have to say that when I actually stopped and pondered the surge brakes on the trailer that my brother rented, they seemed to make a lot of sense. I figure there must be a reason that this style of braking isn't more popular, but perhaps that's what the trailer and transportation forum is for. :D

This is good to hear. I have a Tahoe, which is essentially a 1/2 ton Silverado, and I've wondered how it'd do if I ever towed my BX somewhere. I used it a couple weeks ago to drag (tow bar) a Dodge Dakota about 15 miles, and it did an okay job. I definitely wasn't going to win any drag races, but it also didn't seem too overworked.

My experiencies with U-Haul would lead me to advise you to use them as your second to last resort. The last resort being driving your tractor along the shoulder of the road to your desitnation.

Its' not that I have any problems with the company. Its just that I perfer to not deal with people that lie to me, refuse to practice sound judgement, and compromise the safety of their clients and others on the road.

I used a UHaul 6 x 12 trailer when I picked up my B7200 that I purchased on eBay. It towed just fine with a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer. The trailer is very stout as others have alluded to and I would not have wanted to pull it without the surge brakes. I towed the tractor/trailer about 100 miles over relatively flat ground here in Central IL.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I looked at the 6x12 utility trailer but the max load rating is 1900 lbs., a bit low for the 2650 lbs tractor/loader/bh total.

The car carrier looked a bit better with a 4K max rating.

Interesting...

The 6 x 12 U-Haul I rented had (going from memory here) an empty weight of 1760 and a GVW of 4400. That left 2640 for the tractor, close enough as far as I was concerned.

Sounds like they may have different versions of the 6 x 12's

The car carriers that I looked at didn't have a solid deck and the track spacing was way to wide for the BX24 to fit.

The 6 x 12 worked fine for me, towed fine, handled well, I dragged it about 120 miles over the hills from Albany to Massachusetts.

Hope this helps,

Jim
