I've got a new L4400 coming up on 50 hours. Has anyone had the dealer do the 50 hour service on a similar machine? If so, approximately what did it cost including filters/fluid/labor, etc?

I suspect that cost of the filters/fluid will be the same either way. If I do the work myself, I'll only be saving the cost of labor and the hassle of trailering the machine to them. Think its worth doing it yourself the first time? Or, should I just let the dealer do it the first time?

Any thoughts/advice are appreciated.

I was toying with the idea of having my dealer do the service. After getting a price of $500. i was happy to do it myself!

If you have the capability to change the oil in your automobile, you can do the 50 hour service on your tractor. Although you need the capacity to catch a lot more fluid. I have a B7800 and it took me two to three hours with less aggravation than getting it hauled to the dealer. Materials cost $220 +/-. If you have a backhoe subframe, that can add some 'challenge' to the process.

WOW!

I had my dealer do the 50 hour service on my M5040 and it was $669 total.

Here's what was included:

1. Change eng oil and filter, change hyd oil and filters, change front axle fluid, and change fuel filter.

2. Check coolant level, fan belt, wheel bolt torque, tire pressure, and brake pedal free play.

3. Clean trash from radiator screen and air filter.

4. Grease the unit.

They even cleaned out the cab and washed the windows.

$433 for parts.
$180 labor.
$9.00 misc shop supplies.

Yes it's expensive but I would have had to spend the $400 for material anyways and they really do a good job in the service dept!

I had the dealer do the 50 hr. service on my L3430. The cost was $621 which included transport to & from. Normally I do my own maintenance but the 50 hr. is an important one and I wanted the dealer to look it over. It's not that difficult to do yourself just be prepared to catch a lot of fluid.:D
Hope this helps.

I think I'll get a quote from my dealer. I haven't done that yet as I wanted to see what people here typically did. The $700 price for parts seems very high but the total price of about $669 seems reasonable considering that $400 were parts and fluid anyway. I know that the SUDT fluid will be the biggest expense and I'll have to pay it either way the service is done. I think that I'm leaning toward having the dealer do it only for the sake of his technical expertise. Paying about $200 for the dealer's experience is reasonable to me.

Yes, I can do this work myself, but since it's still under warranty and is basically brand new, it might be worth having the dealer look it over for any other potential problems or issues.

I'll post what I find out.

Thanks for the responses.

Did the 100hr service, trans, motor, filters and oil came in just under $90.. All items were bought from dealer except motor oil, Wal Mart... Did the full check list for the 100hrs.....

I don't think that the 100 hour service requires replacement of the trans/rear oils. I will certainly do all the motor oil changes myself after the first service. The SUDT hydro/trans/rear fluid is probably the most expensive material in the 50 hour service. Without the book in front of me I think I need about 12 gallons which will probably run $200 or so just for that plus all the filters and such.

I recently bought a new tractor with a two-year warranty. I was wondering whether the warranty still applied if you serviced it yourself instead of having it done by the dealer. Do you have any solid facts on the subject ?
