Two stage hydraulic pumps-are log splitters their only application?

I've been slowly accumulating the parts needed to build a decent sized splitter, most are used and I've gotten them for free or at very low cost. The one missing piece so far is the pump. From what I've seen my choices are either buy new or hope to find a splitter with a dead engine (which kind of defeats the purpose of what I'm doing)-everywhere else I look for used/surplus items has only single stage pumps. Any ideas?

Call me cheap, but those pumps are all new units. The cheapest 16 GPM pump is $135 which is more than I want to spend. I suppose if I have to I will, but I was hoping that I could get some ideas here about the kinds of equipment that normally use 2 stage pumps (if there are any) so that I comb my local salvage yard for one.

You can use a single stage pump, but the HP required to power it will be a lot more. A 11 GPM single stage pump using 3000 psi, will require about a 23 HP engine.

A 16 GPM single stage pump would require about 33 HP.

A power steering pump will provide about 1500 psi pressure.

What about a single acting cylinder and a big return spring. Or a small automatic transmission between the motor and the pump, lol.

Sounds like missing limbs and busted pumps...nevermind.

Since all I have to work with is a salvaged 12 HP Briggs and Stratton a single stage is out of the question. Perhaps my best bet is going with the new 2 stage pump for $135.

Yes they can be used elsewhere but the most common application by far is on logsplitters.

I have seen them used on larger laoding docks as an example.

Ha! That would probably cycle nice and quick! I think I'll stick to the 16 GPM pump. That's what all of the 30 ton splitters from Northern Tool use, so it ought to be good enough for me. I have an 8 ton right now that's a little small but it does ok. 22 more tons should be more than enough for what I need Plus its always good to be a little overpowered because the engine is really working as hard right?
