I have recently purchased an 05, model 5203 and have a question. The owners manual says the 540 PTO speed is achieved @ 2400rpm. There is a PTO symbol on the tach showing that. However there is another PTO symbol at 1700 rpm. This symbol has an 'E' under it. Does anyone know what this 'E' represents? The engine is much quieter when running at the 1700rpm and that is what I have been using when bush hogging unless in heavier material. Thanks

I believe the 540E is a feature on some tractors that allow the tractor to provide the needed 540 RPM at the PTO at a lower engine RPM. I don't believe the 5203 has the feature. May be that the same dash is used as is in tractors that have that feature.

If I were a betting man, I would say that is the RPM they want you to Engage at and then rev up to the 2400rpms needed for the 540PTO rpms. I always engage the rear PTO at around 1500rpms and then rev it up to the PTO mark on the tach.

Well I think I you would loose that bet.:D

The "E pto" at about 1700 rpm is the economy pto, when engaged it turns the pto shaft at 540 utilizing the lower engine speed. Saves fuel and wear on engine, where full horsepower is not needed.

I might add it is not essential to operate everything at full pto speed, lowering the rpms somewhat will increase the life of the engine. Engaging the pto at idle is preferred though.

That's why I stay away from Vegas! :D

Here is a good link from John Deere explaining how you can engage the PTO at 1753 rpms vs. 2100 rpms and still achieve 540 PTO rpms. That is a pretty neat system and would definitely save diesel when the full power is not needed.

Willl, yes my tachometer has two of the PTO symbols. One at 1700 and the other at 2400 as shown in the illustration you attached. The one at 1700 has an "E" under the symbol.
I used the bush hog this morning. It seems to work fine at 1700rpm but in very heavy/dense grass you have to speed the motor up.

What a great site! Found this site today while surfing around and now I'm typing! My 5303 has the tach also has two pto settings, the dealer told me that the first one(around 1700 rmp) was for light duty, such as disc mowing, tedding, etc and that the other one was for hay baling and brush hogging. At least that's what I was told!

I think this is the correct answer. The late model 5003 series tractors use the same gauge cluster as some other tractor that actually has the ePTO feature.

The 5003 tractors do not have 2 speed PTO gearboxes. You can run the motor up to the 1700 RPM symbol, but the PTO shaft will only be turning at 383 RPM instead of 540.

It is the economy PTO. Universal instrument cluster - used regardless if you have the feature or not. The economy PTO is becoming more common in the JD line.

I have it on my 5525. If I have the economy PTO lever engaged - the engine will only rev to a tad past that proper 540 RPM on the tach.
