As good as it is, why don't we eat turkey all year?

I think I will hurry and get the patent in on my recipe for "turkey cologne" and "turkey perfume". One for men and one for the little woman. I think I will call it "Turkey Cologne ode Redbug".

Turkey......."the other white meat"....or perhaps dark...
its all good.....

The Free range organic turkey we had yesterday was wonderful.:D:D:D
It went from walking around in my neighbors farm to being eaten in about 48 hours and no freezing or water added was involved in the process. Not that there is anything wrong with those practices, but I question what is the benifit of it?

I think the reason we don't eat them all year long is because they are just to darn big!

We have developed a taste for the turkey bacon that Sams club sells and we eat a lot of it so perhaps we are geting our turkey afterall.

Love the Turkey bacon all we use now..

I think the biggest reason they add water ,outside of a moist turkey is the added weight. At a buck a pound that's allot of revenue figuring a million turkeys with say 3-4 ounces of "extras"..

That's probably right. They have just the turkey bone-in breasts but I haven't tried them. But we do occasionally buy one of the 3 pound turkey "roasts". Kind of expensive, but very good, cooked in the smoker, with or without injectable marinade. They have them in white meat only and a combination of dark and white, which I prefer.

I haven't tried the turkey bacon; guess I need to do that. I've tried the ground meat and turkey sausage and while it isn't bad, it just doesn't suit my taste like beef and pork.

I watched an episode of 20-20 recently that pointed out the nutritional value of turkey bacon is about the same as pork bacon. If you look up the nutritional label online, you find the turkey bacon looks much better, but that's because the serving size is probably around 80 grams and the bacon serving size is around 100 grams. If you compare them gram-for-gram, good ol' pork bacon ain't that much worse. Both of them are through the roof on calories from fat, cholestrol, and sodium. Turkey bacon is no magic bullet.

I'm not a really big fan of turkey bacon, so this was very good info for me even though I rarely eat any bacon at all. I'm not sure about turkey sausage or turkey ham. I love both of them and eat turkey ham quite often. I just think the best idea is to eat less and make sure I get plenty of vegetable fiber. I'm a big veggies fan, but I do love meats as well. The difference is that I can eat all veggies for a meal, but if I eat only meat, it seems like something is missing.:(

I just got back from the store and bought my first package of turkey bacon, so I'll soon see how I like it. And I like the turkey ham, but not quite as much as I like pork ham.:)

One brines meats to add moisture and flavor. Brining is nothing more than adding sugar and/or salt to water and soaking the meat for a period of time. Butter Ball likes to brine because it does add weight which costs more money.

The turkey I bought was "free" since the store gave us $20 to buy a turkey. The bird was .98 a pound and I bought a 17 pound turkey so I kept $3 in my pocked. :)

I did not brine my turkey this year though I have in the past. This year's turkey was very moist and did not need the extra moisture.

Later,
Dan
