I'm the new owner of a 2012 polaris ranger diesel with the 24 hp yanmar 904 cc engine. by itself the machine is pretty impressive, but a gasser will wax it when it comes to quickness and speed..... Don't get me wrong, I dont' want to be the fastest guy running, but when going over long distances with this machine even the slightest headwind will knock me from 35 mph to 28. and with sometimes 6 miles to drive it gets old. especially when the machine will govern out at 42 mph when going with the wind or on a slight downhill.

I just need a few more hp, and a good way to do it without burning a couple thousand dollars that I dont have.!

I'm an ex caterpillar mechanic, so installing a turbo isn't a big deal, but making sure I get the right sized one and route the supply/return lines (oil) to the correct places needs to be right.

Also, if I turbo it, I'm going to need to turn the pump up a bit to gain any real measureable HP. anyone know these yanmar pumps well enough to tell me how to get more fuel?

These engines are the little brothers to the ones used in the RTVs, so the RTV parts should be close, but I don't know what those parts are or where to get them....

Any help would me much appreciated!

I installed a Garrett GT 1752 from a Saab on my Ford 1720.
There are aftermarket turbines, compressors & housings available so you should be able to tailor it to work in your situation.
The center section, compressor and exhaust turbine housings are clock able allowing it to be setup easily.
My tractor is 1.5 liter & runs 8psi boost. It may be worth a try.
I found mine at a swap meet for $35.

I'm loaced in southeast montana.

Yeah, I've looked at the one from PPE, but it's just way more than I want to spend. it's got water cooling, a fancy garrett turbo and other stuff. it's a nice kit, but I'm not gonna spend that much on one. I'm thinking more around less than $1000.

I've been making some calls, and it seems that the general conclusion is for me to run a RHF4 turbo by IHI. I guess he said a TD03 kubota turbo would work good too, but parts availablity was poor.

there's lots of the RHF4 turbo's on ebay for not alot of money, so that just leaves buying the plumbing kits.

Don't know who you've been talking to but that would be too big to be very useful in your situation, and I've tried a bunch of them on similar sized engines.

I would buy a Mitsubishi TD02 twin scroll, should be able to pick up for the $450 range brand new, then you have the adapter and plumbing. There is a dowel you take out in the housing and you can clock it for your situation.

the TD02 looks tiny, but that's fine if I can get 7 psi on a 904cc diesel, and good repsonce... last thing I want is a sluggish turbo that doesn't make any boost because it's too big. plus a smaller turbo would help with the small space I've got to work with.

I've been doing alot of looking at centrifugal superchargers too, that's what I'd prefer to use and forget the turbo altogether, but it looks like it'll cost more money.

What are you using for adapter plates? my yanmar has a square exhaust flange and not the triangular one I've been seeing.

We got 45-60 pounds out of one on a 68 cube 3 cylinder Kubota (bigger than yours). Course the wastegate was not used and engine highly modified. We CNC adapters.

You would not be happy with the other turbo. I spent a couple years with many different small turbos on these diesels and the dumbest thing guys do is put one on that's too big.

You can go to a lot of tractor shows and see the guys with the 12hp Kohlers and such with a T3 turbo on it driving around. All show, couldn't get a boost gauge to wiggle if they had to.

All Good info.

I got to looking for a TD02, and there's not alot out there. there's a couple with the manifold attached, which I'm not sure I want because I'm sure it won't fit my yanmar if it was designed for a mitsubishi. the turbo's that were by themself were in the $350 range with almost $100 to ship from Japan.

Did some more searching, and found this

-MOTORCYCLE QUAD RHINO Turbo BIKE SEADOO Small IHI RHB31 | eBay the turbo looks as small as the TD02, but it's built by IHI, or so they say.

My concern with this one is the price. it seems pretty cheap for somthing new, and how can I be sure this is an IHI piece and not a knock off? I'm going to e mail them tomorrow. even so, the hp capacity of it looks about right for my diesel. what do you think?

Another consideration that will need to be addressed is the clutching of the belt system, the weights and springs are calibrated to engine output. On the Polaris Ranger RZR that I have there arecha nges to the springs and weights of the govenor cup to keep the engine loaded properly through its power range.
