My wife and I rescue and rehabilitate abused golden retrievers. To help us with this work we have four of our own, our core pack. Today we lost our matriarch, Tuppence the Wonderbitch. She was only ten, but had been diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma a few days ago. We've been through this before with others, so figured we had a month at best. I made plans to spend as my time with her as possible, starting this weekend.

But she took a turn for the worse while I was at work today, and my wife called in the afternoon expressing concern. I left early, and got home to the usual jubilant greeting from my three boys: Tadcaster, Barley and Kazoo. Then I looked up to see Tuppence staggering toward me. She made it to within a few feet before falling heavily to her side, so I sat with her on dirt. She scraped forward a few more inches to rest her white muzzle on my thigh, and looked up at me with big brown eyes brimming with love.

A few minutes later she was gone.

She was a wonderful, loving dog, and I'll miss her.

Pete

Oh, Pete, I am SOOOO sorry!!!! I know you've been through it before, and so have I, and it NEVER gets any easier!!!! My heart goes out to you. No words can take away the hurt, and I won't even try to.

We don't e-mail much anymore, but I think about you a lot, and your four footed family. I remember Molson, Tetley, Oliver and others, and I know how much it hurts. I've lost two of my best pals in the past 2 years, and I still cry for them, and I always will. The hurt never goes away, but their love is worth it.

I'm thinking of you, old friend. I'm crying for you and Tuppence, too.

I am really sorry Pete. Our dogs are family to us and it is always hard when we lose one. I am glad you were there and she didn't suffer long.

I love goldens like bees love honey. My golden died saving my life . If I told the story no one would believe it , so I keep it to myself. My wife won't let me get another, so I try not to think about that dog. Darn you, you made me think about him and I'm sitting here crying like a baby.

Sorry to hear your story, but thank you for being an animal caregiver and for sharing.

My sympathies, Pete. We foster dogs and have 3 of our own. It hurts deeply when they leave us.

Pete,
Sorry for your loss,
can there be a more unconditional
love than from a dog like that?

RIP Tuppence
