Since you guys were very helpful in my decision to purchase the 2015 2500 in the attached picture, what tuner would you recommend for this truck? Looking for a little more power, nothing extreme. Been a great truck so far . 63k miles.

Most tuners to get minimal gains are going to require you to run 93 octane full time so read the fine print before you buy, I have a Superchips Flashpaq that I use on my 2012 Silverado 1/2 ton with the 5.3 and other than turning off Active Fuel Management and reading and clearing codes there isn't much to it.

I’ve got a tuner on my Dodge Challenger. I had it on a dyno also and it increased the power about 10%. I’ve also got different exhaust and a lower restriction air cleaner setup but most of the gains are from the tuner. Dodge recommended 89 octane for my car and with the tuner I like to run 93 octane or 91 at the least. With my tuner I can log data and even with higher octane I can see where it pulls a little timing after shifts. I also firmed up my shifts.

The tuner can do several things depending on the vehicle, the big ones fuel and ignition timing. It seems contrary to emissions requirements but most vehicles run rich at full throttle. So in my case the tuner leaned out the fuel and bumped up the ignition timing. It also turns off the torque management so the shifts at full throttle are much harder. There is also three different rpm ranges you can control fuel and timing. This not only increases the maximum power but makes it come on sooner.

Obviously none of this does anything positive except make more power. It’s going to hurt drivetrain longevity but all these things I don’t think hurt the engine any unless you abuse it. I know they make gas mileage tunes but I wouldn’t expect much there. Unless you are into getting that last bit of performance from your truck I’d probably pass. You also want to do research if you get one to find one that actually works.

Holley makes a range of tuners and deleters. I put one on my wife's Burb to delete the sequential valve bs (which also causes them to burn oil) and she only lost 1/2 mpg and still does just fine on regular weasel pee. Besides, it sounds better when she mashes on it, sounds like the V8 it is. Gm, like Fords and FCA does some stupid crap for the cause of corporate average fuel mileage. She don't care about mileage at all and neither do I. It is what it is when driving a tank. The trick is, if you want to call it that is drive on cruise as much as possible and drive the speed limit or 5 under which will entail leaving a bit early to get to where you are going on time if, it's that important. Most trips aren't.

When idiots blow past us I always think to myself... Stoopid.

You're probably not going to get much power from a tune on a naturally aspirated engine. Without the ability to raise boost there's not much they can do.

But getting the transmission reprogrammed can benefit vehicles with all kinds of engines. Often the factory programming will have the trans shifting to a high gear early. That can get better mileage on the EPA cycle but hurts driveability. The tune can also make the clutches engage harder which makes them live longer because they slip less.

I’m not sure I agree with Eric’s idea you won’t pick up much power but he may be correct. You need to get on a forum that specializes more in your truck. Then you will be able to see real world results on what people are picking up with a tune.

My wife's Burb has tow-haul mode and it quite drastically alters the trans shift points and clutch lockup as well. Deleting the stupid GM sequential valve timing (stupid and failure prone idea) also increases power.

My biggest problem is the fact that you have to run 93 octane all the time everything I read on different forums said if you don't it runs like crap and I'm really not interested in spending about 50 cent more per gallon which equals about $ 18.00 more everytime I fill up my 36 gallon tank.

I appreciate that. I'm the same way, why I went with the sequential cylinder delete on my wife's burb. hell, we are in our 70's and my need for speed has diminshed greatly. I still have my 14 Focus RS turbo with a 6 speed if I want to go fast anyway. Has a 150 mph clock and I bet I can bury it too. The RS came with no speed limiter on the German made engine and it flat screams. 330 horses in a roller skate and best part is my insurance company insures it as an economy hatch back. Mentioned in another post that I sucked the paint off a 5.0 Mustang GT the other day on a straight 2 lane not far from here. Thought he would be a smart arse and pass me on a curve that empties into the straight away Got out in the oncoming lane and firewalled it in 3rd gear (7000 RPM on the rev limiter) Power shifted into 4th (I can still do that when I get pizzed), the tires squaked, it will turn the tires in 4 gears and flat out left his sorry butt. Shifted into 5th and looked at the speedo and I was topping 130 on a 55 mph 2 lane so I backed it down, no point it getting arrested for excessive speed or reckless driving. The 5.0 turned off. Bet he was amazed. I removed all the RS badging when I bought it and the racing stripes as well and it's silver metallic not 'race red' Only give away are the 4 tail pipes out back and the kind of wide low profile tires in alloy rims and if you look close you can see the Brembo dual piston racing brakes on slotted and drilled rotors.

Best part was I bought it off a 2 year Fords factory lease with under 15 K miles on it and total documentation. Most people don't want a 6 speed and cannot drive it anyway. I extended the factory warranty for an additional 5 years or 100K miles and it cost me 11 grand and I paid cash for it. If I drive my age (which I do 99% of the time and short shift it), I can get 39-40 mpg even with the air on

A genuine sleeper, to bad Fords quit making them. BTW, it farts fire when you hot rod it, just like the European go fast cars.

that can be problematic. On forums you tend to get alot of fanboys who swear something is absolutely the best way to go...because that's what they spent there money on.

I own a 2012 suburban 2500. It's got no DOD and wont ever have performance parts on it. There just not worth the money to me as it tows everything I need to plus the family.
