remove the bbl band on the starter especially if the clip faces the block, remove the drain petcock.

angle the rear of the starter in to block and down, so that the drive gear on the shaft is coming out of the hole at about the 2 oclock location. in that location the drive gear is about as far away from the ring gear as it is gonna be.. and then you have to jocky it between the bellhousing and ring gear in a side to side seesaw motion.

many tractors have that 2 oclock area hollowed out with a file so that it looks like a hole overlaying another hole. many people file the hole out if there is not already like that.

in the end. hold yer touge just right usually helps too.

ps.. when you get it slid back a lil. pop a couple nuts on the 2 long bolts to keep from pulling the starter field casing off the armature.. or you'll be posting back how to capture the brushes and get the armature back into the field housing. :)

Thanks for the info. So (not) looking forward to trying it. At the risk for sounding totally dumb, I know the firing order on the motor, however, I do not know the location of the #1 cylindar. Is it the one closest to the radiator or to the back of the tractor?

Front. Closest to radiator.

removing the starter will be easy.. may just be time consuming getting all the stars to line up to get it over the ring gear.
