well, I just ordered a new 7-16 ag lug. definatly a much bigger PIA than the last time one was needed. I'm starting to think maybe I should be looking into using a mud tire (LR C or heavier) for a 16" rim next time around.

Anyone do this?

a quick search found hese
225-75R16-MUD-(E) - Retread Tires from TreadWright, Inc.

I could have got a pair for about the same price as the 1 tractor tire

I have a friend with a small tractor that came with paddle tires. He put a mild mud type truck tire on it that was the same rolling circumference. No problems, and now it rides a lot better. David from jax

No problems as long as it is not a four wheel drive tractor as it would be hard to match the fronts so you don't get axle wind up .

It is a 4x4 I am talking about. I could have picked up some 3 ribs from tractor suply pretty easy.
The tire I linked to is within a half an inch of being the same circumferance of a 7-16. much less varience than I'd see from inflation, wear, or tire chains.
That is one of those things were close enough is good enough. Many 4x4 trucks don't have the exact same gear ratio front and rear because the different axle front and rear can't be made in the same ratios. you might have a 4.09:1 on one end, and a 4.11: to one on the other. but you are right to point it out as a possible concern.

Glad to know its at least an option like I was thinking it was. I want to keep the ag lug designs for this tractor, but like I said, if it gets that much harder again to find a replacement, I might not have that option next time.

You are correct then , 1/2" in circumference will not have any great affect on the drive line . As you would also know , it is a good idea to be in 2X4 on hard ground wherever possible . Especially when doing loader work as the front tyres flatten out and can cause damaging wind up .

As already stated, 4wd should not be used on hard ground. That will probably matter more than the 1/2" diameter diffence. When you turn, all 4 tires travel different distances anyway.

And when the front and rear are travelling different distances, you have either lead or lag. Lead (front tires travel further than rear) is good. Lag is bad.

God yes. Been running light truck fronts since '96. They last so much longer, much better traction in snow(radials) and better traction in mud than R4's. I run my tlb to and from jobs on road as well as tons of loader work, mowing with rotary cutter, tilling gardens and such. I put about 500 hours on a year, not a lot for a farmer, but I have a day job, so I'm not on the tractor all the time. I got about 3000 hours on a set of BFG AT/KO. My front rims are 8" and they were 9.50Rx15. My new ones are 235R15's(a cheaper brand).
