So I have a new 2014 Silverado 1500 LTZ Crew Cab 4wd with the 5.3 V8. I have been a Mobil 1 user for years. Mobil 1 has this new oil out that is guaranteed for 15k mile oil change intervals. However I like using the AC Delco filters, which I already have 2 setting on the shelf. My question is, and Mobil cant answer, does the AC Delco PF63E filter have the capability to go 15k miles also? Not sure where to find this info. My Oil life monitor system goes off at about 8k miles. I'm just afraid the oil will out live the filter. I can buy the Mobil 1 filter also that is good for 15k miles or I could just keep doing the oil changes at about 8k miles or probably 10k. Thoughts?

Will a filter change and add the quart that was in the filter shut the oil monitor up? If so, then I would alternate. Filter at 8 K and oil and filter at 15k.

Does this truck have direct injection for fuel delivery? Not familiar with Chevy. If so all manufactures have been plagued with fuel getting past the rings and diluting (washing out) the oil. Oil with fuel in it breaks down very quickly and will cause issues with timing components. If so then change the oil no longer than 5k and less if you have an engine that has some blow by due to ring gap clearance issues. If no direct injection then you don't have to worry.

To answer your question, only a synthetic filter can last as long as synthetic oil. Since you have filters already, just change the filter at 5k and add oil to top it off.

I have a Ford with the ecoboost (TTDI) and it's hard on oil. I use Mobil 1 extended performance and change every 3k miles because of the DI and high pressure fuel pump. It's good oil...

This motor is Direct Injection and uses no oil. There was an issue with the earlier 5.3 motors but I believe the issue has been fixed on the new Ecotec V8's. The OLM can be reset at anytime. It has no idea that you actually changed the oil or not. It just goes off based on driving conditions only. It has no idea how dirty the oil is.

It's not so much of using oil, but the problem lies when it makes oil. Only way to do that is with fuel, outside of coolant, which is not good even in low doses.

I have been using Mobil 1 since mile 1. I know have 168,000 miles and I have not used or leaked any oil. I change filters at 5k and oil and filter every 10 k. Unless I see a 2 quart filter I would never run 10k on one.

Run it for 5K, get a Used Oil Analysis. If it looks good, run it some more, retest, etc.

On my dually I ended up running it for Rotella T6 for 18K and was still getting great UOA's.

Thirteen years and 208,000 miles on the 03, eight years and 125,000 miles on the 08 without an oil related failure. The change oil indicator goes off on both my trucks at 10,000 miles. I have to have it done once or twice a year. It cost $70 to get a diesel serviced at the dealership, gas motors are half that. For my peace of mind I change both oil and filter when indicated. Why gamble on an oil related failure that will cost more than you could ever save.

I don't have a "change oil indicator" on my '02 F350 7.3. The Ford official recommended change interval is 3,000 miles for my usage (I tow about 1,800 miles round trip, driving near my max GWR on interstate). It cost about $80 at my Mississippi dealership for an oil/filter change, plus two hours of my time, going to the dealer, waiting, coming home.. It cost ~ $20 for a UOA and a little drain time, about 5 minutes. I skipped 5 instances of recommended change ($300 and 10 hours of my time) for the cost of 4 UAO's ($80 and 20 minutes). In the future I will sample less often.

I don't view it as "gambling", rather "trust but verify".

/edit - I did this after reading several forums where Ford F350 owners reported their oil change intervals with UOA's.

Going longer than 5k miles is impossible for me to do. But that equals only 2 oil changes per year on average. Cheap insurance.

But....I do keep telling myself that the engine will far outlast the body. So maybe I need to rethink this.
