Truck hits tractor, kills 58yr old farmer

This is a bit of a freaky accident because you would expect the tractor to at least be on the road when it was hit. In this case, the tractor was actually sitting in a driveway, I suppose waiting for the traffic to clear before he pulled out. You have to wonder what the second truck driver was doing, clearly he was distracted, or at least not paying attention to what was up ahead. Regardless, it's still a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family for their loss.



ANDERSON COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - A 58-year-old farmer was killed Thursday when a truck left the road and slammed into his tractor, according to the coroner.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said Harold Clinkscales was using his John Deere tractor to pull a hay rake. Clinkscales was stopped in a driveway off Smith McGee Road just outside Starr, Shore said. Shore said an Elberton man slowed his pickup truck when he saw the tractor to see if it was going to pull out. A second pickup driven by 58-year-old Eddie Arnold sideswiped the first truck and left the roadway and crashed into Clickscales' tractor, Shore said. Clinkscales died at the scene. Arnold was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the first truck was not injured.There was no immediate word of any charges in connection to the crash.

Wow. That's terrible, one guy tries to slow down and another veers off and kills someone. Looks like the truck hit the rear of the tractor and probably threw the operator.

The lead truck must have slowed quickly or braked and following truck didnt notice till too late tried to keep from rear ending the lead vehicle and hit the tractor which was the reason the first truck slowed in first place. What a tragedy. I wonder if a cell phone was involved in the distraction of the crash truck.

Just a thought? Even if the first truck had suddenly slowed down, braked, or stopped, a driver of any vehicle must be in control of his vehicle at all times. You may be correct in your question relating to possible cell phone usage. Certainly a possibility. Further investigation will most certainly provide the answers to the cause.

Similar event happened to me. Slowed to enter my driveway...watching car behind to make sure it didn't rear-end me. Didn't see the the vehicle behind the car leave the road to avoid car behind me. Totaled my minivan.

The careful guy most certainly didn't cause the accident, it was caused by the truck driver behind him either following too close and/or not paying attention, quite possible a combination of the two.

Almost as weird as a plane that went through the roof of a Preacher's house and killed the whole family in Va. a few years back. Death just comes at you sometimes and it's hard to know when it'll happen, or how.
