My horse has a game leg. I can't get enough tension on the drive belt to keep it from slipping. It will tighten up enough to run the drive wheels but the tines give me problems. If I push down on the forward lever and keep tension on it the tines will work.

I have replaced the drive belt, installed a new spring on the forward lever, and adjusted the cam/wedge that locks it in forward. Set it all up as the manual specifies.

Having to use two hands, one on the handle and one pushing down on the lever, is not condusive to me working in the garden and enjoying a wheat and barley.

Sounds like maybe it is to tight and your lever lock thing is not down far enough to stay, seemed like mine did that once, maybe a little to much slick stuff on it also, was it doing this before you put new belt on,cause if it wasn't its probably your belt than,I got a old horse as well.

I think you didn't get the adjuster tight enough if you have to push down on the lever to keep the tines going. Make a mark where it is now and try moving it down another 1/16" or so.

Well, evidently you don't have an old horse tiller, the thing has to be below another thing to go,you use the leever to get the one thing below the thing, you let go of lever the thing is supposed to STAY under the other thing,if you got it adjusted to much[tight] the thing will just slip out,and lever will pop up,[not stay].

So,actually,he may need to loosen it up,to get it to stay tight and till, with lever staying down.

My belts are loose as a goose. My two-speed lever slips out of gear as well, so, since I took the skirt off so I can see what I'm doing, I use a couple of bungee cords hooked to the skirt bar and I'm good to go. Of course I'm going to change the belts, but only after I'm done with the garden.

oldmanmike: you are saying belt"s" are loose: make sure you have one of the tillers thats suppose to have more than one belt if you have two: many many many are actually 4 speed tillers and are suppose to have only one belt.

In the original post, he stated he didn't have enough tension on the belt, which is why I suggested tightening it a little more. You are also right in that if too tight, the roller won't stay where it's supposed to and the lever will pop back into neutral. It's a bit of a pain to adjust as 1/16" can make all the difference, since the belt wraps around 180 degrees, 1/16" on the adjuster accounts for 1/8" of belt length (1/16" on each side of the pulley) I've had on occasion had to play with the adjust ment 3 or 4 times to hit the sweet spot that got everything just right.

Yeah,on mine [just have one belt on mine, guess some had two],the belt is always loose UNTILL you push down on the lever[which if adjusted right, stays down] thus keeping belt tight, its what makes belt tight.

He never did write back,so who knows?
