troubleshooting 1948 8N

Hey there I've been trolling these forums for a while now and have read hours and hours about this 8N.

I bought it not running. It's 6V. Needed points, plugs, battery, condenser, rotor, and plug wires. I had it going good and bush hog my 5 acre field with it. I washed it and let it all dry out. Wouldn't start.Found the main needle was broken so I completely rebuilt the carb. Replaced ignition switch with a universal 2 wire. . Wouldn't fire still.
Today I went out and it was acting like it wanted to fire but wouldn't quite get there. I put the test light on it and had power all the way down to points. Pulled the carb and had fuel getting through it into engine. My only thing left is the coil so I ordered one.

Any other thoughts?

Test the spark. Take a plug wire and spark plug and rest on the block so you can see spark. Sould be strong blue-white spark. Start there...

I am new to this forum and ironically I'm in about the same situation. I was going to post a new topic but hopefully you won't mind me consolidating mine with yours. I just bought a Ford 8N, it has the 12V conversion but it wasn't and is currently not running. I have checked the spark, its good and blue-white. I figured it was then a fuel issue, so I tried a bit of starting fluid and didn't even get a sputter..... I have hand choked the carb and it the gas doesn't pour out but its enough to wet my hand. SO my question is should I pull the carburetor and do a total clean out of it? I always figured if I had spark the starting fluid should get me a sputter at least. I think this tractor has been sitting for at least 3 years. Thanks

poster witht he 6v machine.

is it side mount or front mount?

what do you have the points and plugs gapped at? what plugs did you use?

what resistor, if any are you using.

the the poster with the 12v unit.

do you have spark at all 4 plugs when turning over?


using your thumb.. do you have compression on all 4 cyls when turning over?

6v front mount. Autolite plugs. The good one that is recommended for these tractors, compression is good. I'm pretty sure resistor is factory if I have one.

It has been sub zero in CO for the last week also. Maybe the cold played a part?

wow.. that post almost had NO info in it.

no # on the plugs. compression? no number.. but we can go with good for now. ressitor.. you think it's correct.. but can't say for sure IF you have one?

Sorry for the vague response. the plugs are 437's I believe. I don't have compression numbers. .015 and .025 are correct. I'm not sure about the resistor though. It is sparking. I think it could be weak though. That's why I ordered the coil.
