JD 850 clicks by the starter switch when turning the key but will not engage the starter. After many tries it will work, sometimes it does work right away. Any ideas???

If you ever get an answer I sure would appreciate hearing about it...I have a 750 and it has been erratic to start since I got . I have had it in the JD dealer 3 times. spent a lot of money. Each time it starts fine when I leave, but within a month or so it is right back to start no start. I even took it to a second dealer. All that did was leave me lighter in the pocket. There is one common thread. They both said the same thing...thats why the color is green..:( Love the tractor when it works. But getting the "odd" problems resolved can be tough since the dealers have more than enough business with the easy stuff. Anway, good luck on your issue, maybe it is an easy one. Hope to hear from you.

Usually the problem is low voltage that energizes the starter. These tractors were designed without a starter relay, and now that they are getting older, you get a little resistance in the wiring, and safety switches which reduces the voltage to the starter solenoid wire. I have repaired alot of these by installing a relay in the circuit. Install the relay close to the starter for best performance. There is a kit available that was designed for larger tractors that I usually use. It is part number RE44536. It comes with instructions to install on 3020 or 4020 ag tractors, but with slight modification it will fit the 50 series compacts or any other 12 volt starting system for that matter.

Replacing the ignition switch solved that problem for me.

I cut the old one open to see what happened. It was packed solid with fried pillbug hulls, and the contacts were mostly insulated by carbon.

Now it starts fine.

Another point of failure could be the clutch safety switch.
