I have a AC D17 I'm wondering if it has enough hp to lift 1200lb round bales. It will lift them barely off the ground then stop. I need a tractor that can move this size round bale so any feedback would be helpful

Thanks

TractorData.com Allis Chalmers D17 tractor information

This site will not say what it will pickup, but just alittle info for you to look at. Around here in Iowa it is common to see the D17 still out being used. I have seen them with round bales on backend. That is assuming they are close to the same weight, and if the hitch is stock.

Welcome to TBN!!

If it lifts some but not high enough, your problem is hydraulic lifting power, not horsepower. Am unfamiliar with the particular tractor you have and what it is spec'd to lift.

Likely, you need a different tractor since bales vary a lot in weight depending on moisture content from being just cut or rain. I used a tractor that could barely lift my round bales for several years... real pain...dangerous.

An alternative is to get a hay spike trailer and pull it behind the tractor... but this has issues as well...can't stack hay...less maneuverable.

Not familiar with your tractor but 60 HP and a cat 2 3-point should lift a bale OK. You don't say if it's the 3-point you're using or a loader. In either case it's likely a case of not enough hydraulic pressure or leaking seals. I'd start with a pressure gage and see what you have. If you're using a loader that tractor is probably on the small side but should work if weighted enough and used on level ground.

I feel your pain too. I have a D17 series III with a FEL. Spent quite a bit of time rebuilding the engine, making a toothbar, and generally restoring and beefing up the tractor. I finally got everything done last month. One of my projects is to build a pond. I ordered a manual for the loader. It's lifting capacity is 2000 lbs if I remember correctly. I can't get it to raise more than halfway up with a full bucket of topsoil. It also comes back down (with an empty bucket) on its own with no external leaks.

Paul, you would have internal leakage in them cylinders. I guess if you do not need to lift that much, leave it be or, if you do, replace seals.
