My family and I went up the the football hall of fame this weekend. On the way back we took the scenic amish country route back. Here are a few photo's along the way. Amish country, Homes county NE Ohio.

No trip through amish country is complete without a stop at
Lehman's hardware store.
This is a "home depot/Lowes" for the amish comunity. Many non electric items. Strange mix of Amish and Mennoite families buying items for daily use and tourist buying the same things to use as decorations.

This time of year most of the tour busses are gone and most of the fall fest are over. Parking wasnt a problem today.

When driving in amish country you need to keep a sharp eye out for the locals. You can come up on a buggy pretty fast if you dont watch out.

Which Amish country gws? I saw your first post and immediately thought the college football hall of fame in South Bend, and the Amish in Shipshewana but we don't have a Lehman's near here. You must be in Ohio?

Great pics, thanks for posting /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Gary; Looks a lot like my area in North/Central Lower Michigan. Ya gotta give them Amish credit for being dedicated to livin like they do. I've spoke with many Amish and Mennonites, every one of them were very nice people, but I know what you mean about coming up on a buggy, especially at night! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Came across several of these buggies on Ohio State Rt. 250 last Tuesday on my way home from Detroit.

Our round trip was about 200 miles. The trip up was i71 to US 30 over to I77. COmming home, 30 into wooster then down to kidron, across some county rounds through the amish heartland then back 62 into mtverson then over to morrow county were I live.

The amish area is south of 30, north of 62 east of 13 and west of I77

I pass through Amish country at least 2 times a day. We have 10 families in our town, (2 on our road just a mile away). Glad to have them moving in and keeping the old farms in agriculture. Very good neighbors.

(One of my wifes girlfriends from HS works there.)They do have another store in Mt Hope Oh off St Rt 62 that is in Holmes county. I live about 10 miles from Kidron & pass by on my way to my shop every work day. You're right about the tour busses.......it can get real busy there when they roll in.

If you were there Saturday between 1 and 2 pm we could have seen each other and not known it. I took a trip from lower central Michigan to Massillon to pick up a chainsaw and stopped by Lehmans on my way back.

I was told that Ohio actually has a community with the largest population in the USA. I was thinking that this is Holmes county, although I could be wrong. Lancaster, PA is actually second, not first like I have always thought and Lagrange County, IN is 3rd.
We live on Highway 5, a few miles north of a small Amish community in South Whitley, IN and about 25 miles south of the large Amish commuinty of Shipshewanna IN (in Lagrange County) so we see them quite often. I always slow it down when driving in their areas. Last year I saw a semi pass the car behind me, a horse-drawn one-man cart was coming from the other way (they have their own lanes), the horse reared up in the air, bolted and tried to take the cart through a fence. The man driving finally got the horse under control, but I was sure scared for his safety.
This was also the first time I've ever seen anyone driving such a contraption, it kind of reminded me of the racing sulkies, at the time I assumed he was Amish because of the road and area I was in (on highway 5 just south of Shipshewanna, north of the road to Topeka.

We got to lehmans around 1:30, hit the "market" next door then started our trek home. lehmans is fun, but the market can be better, wasnt many people there today and no amish wares, but during the summer there are lots of amish that show up to sell.

Homes county is suppose to be the WORLDS largest amish community. I think they cheat, but collectivly Homes/wayne and the surround counties are the largest collection of amish in the wordl.
