Newby here... Great site btw..

I just purchased a Kubota L245DT. The person that I purchased it from made the comment that I shouldn’t make the mistake of putting gear oil in the transmission... He had made that mistake before. He said it takes hydraulic fluid.

I looked at the manual when I got home, and it states to use gear oil???

I see that there are hydraulic lines coming out of the tranny for the power steering, and the 3pt so I guess it makes some sense... but I dont understand how hydraulic fluid can provide the needed lubrication.

Help... I want to use my new tow /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif but don’t want to damage it!

For many years Ag tractors have used a common oil supply for the main gearbox and hydraulic system. The gearcase typically holds 4-5 gallons or more - your 245 may take slightly less. Tractor gear oil/hydraulic fluid is relatively heavy - heavier than 10w (light hydraulic oil) but not as heavy as 80w gear oil. If you go to Agway or tractor supply and get a pail of "tractor gear oil/hydraulic fluid" it will be just the thing for the main gearcase. Heavy oil like 80w gear lube doesn't flow well enough for the pump pickup - so isn't recommended for the main reservoir.

The front axle is a separate volume and does not correspond with the main reservoir. The final drives may also be separate (check your book) Seems to me Kubota says regular 80w or 90w gear lube is ok for those. They hold a relatively small amount.

As always, prompt cheerful refund if info is bogus /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Take care,
Dick B

ps- for the small amount some tractors get used, filling them up with plain 30w everywhere probably wouldn't do any measureable damage.
