I just picked up a 16' car hauler and want to add a tool box to it but I'm concerned about how to mount it. My last flatbed had "c" channel where you could drill through the top and bolt everything down but this one has a boxed frame. I can't imagine a self tapper would be enough to keep the box in place so I'm thinking I'd have to drill through both the top and bottom and run a long bolt through the frame. I'm not the best welder and I don't want to make it that permanent (if I can help it). I've looked on line for ideas but I guess I'm not asking the right questions.

I'm open for any suggestions or ideas on how to proceed...

Thanks

The self tapping trailer screws will be plenty.

square or rectangular u-bolts. thru bottom of box around frame. may have to bend them your self, or make them from two long bolts going thru a flat metal bar. taht is what I will probably done for my box.

Anytime I've used self tapping screws in Steel thick as a trailer is made of they will snap off the heads. Self tappers are meant for sheet metal.

You could use a gas tank strap set to hold it or something similar.

They make special ones just for trailers. They are used by the ton to assemble trailers including semi trailers. You can get them at Menards and Lowes.

Here is another vote for square u bolts, unless you let the toolbox go with the trailer when you sell it.

Put the nuts inside the toolbox.

I often use a Tek 5 heavy duty self drilling screw to fasten a treated 2 x 10 to the tongue of my trailers, then fasten my tool boxes to the wood with lag bolts. Never thought to take any pictures of the install, but it's pretty simple. Most farm or hardware stores will have the tek screws.

Everything on this trailer that's bolted down is with the self tappers. The deck, battery breakaway box even the license plate holder. Lots to work with and think about... thanks guys.
