Trailer Size for 54\" Mower

Hi

I'm considering the Cub Cadet 2554 or JD GT245, both of which are 54" mowers. Will these easily fit in a 5' trailer or do I need something wider? Thanks.

Re: Trailer Size for 54\" Mower

Hold the discharge chute up with a bungee, or remove it completely as I did with the JD 345, and it'll squeeze on there just fine. Maybe a little tight, but you'll have a couple of inches to spare. I'm basing this on hauling our JD 345 with a 54" deck on a 5'x10' utility trailer; so far we've had no problems and it's a perfect fit. In fact, for hauling the mower I wouldn't want anything wider -- it just manuevers so much easier than a 6.5' wide trailer.

It should fit, but shouldn't you measure the tractor deck with the chute folded up before buying the trailer?

I'm sure the trailer is wider than the mower, but I'm looking for the necessary side clearance so I don't constantly ding the mower against the sides of the trailer when loading and loading it. Thanks.

Re: Trailer Size for 54\" Mower

If you scroll down this page, you will find the specs for the JD 54C deck. With the chute up, this shows the width at 59.7". Our 5x10 measures just a hair over 61" between the rails. So yes, it is tight, but so long as you watch both sides of the deck closely when loading, it'll fit without rubbing--but barely. Of course, if you want to be absolutely certain the mower will fit, drive down the the dealer with the trailer you want to haul it on--I guarantee they'll let you drive it up on there to see how it fits.

Re: Trailer Size for 54\" Mower

I would go with a 6x10. That is small enough to pull easily, but will handle the mower comfortably from a dimension standpoint. Also, there is not a huge market for 5' wide trailers, so a 6x10 would sell more easily if you decided down the road you wanted to upgrade. There should also not be that much difference in price.

I'd definitely go to a 6 foot wide trailer. Squeezing a 59.7" wide unit on a 61" trailer, you WILL one day whack it and bend something. Especially if it's raining, or dark or both and you are in a little hurry.

Ted:

Two points. You might want to flesh out your profile. It sometimes helps to answer questions if the location, size of property, etc is known.

Secondly. I have a 6' X 10' Trailer. While it tows well, it is over 8' wide at the tires and fenders, so consequently It wouldn't fit through an 8' wide garage door. The extra width of the floor at 6'2" makes it nice to get around the tractor when tie down time comes.

How often do you intend to trailer the tractor? You might be better off renting or borrowing a trailer if it's going to be rarely used. Once you get a trailer, you'll find that it might sit for months unused then be used a lot for a week or two then go unused again for a while.

Re: Trailer Size for 54\" Mower

I like a wider trailer myself. I can see mine when I am backing up to hook it up. Another thing to consider, make sure the gate or ramps are long enough. You don't want to drag the mower when you load it on the trailer. I have a 6.5x12 trailer with a gate that I have used to haul my x475 with 54" deck. JC
