Hello all,

I'm planning on building ramps for my 16 ft pipe utility trailer. I want each ramp to be at least 2ton capable. Does anyone have specs and or pictures of theirs? I want to make each ramp 2ft wide. I'm thinking 3/16" 3X3 angle on the sides and 2X2X 3/16 braces every 6-8"? The trailer deck is about 18" from the ground, so I'm thinking ramps are 4-5' long. As to attaching the ramps to the trailer, it'll be with hinges on 3/4" round stock attached to the trailer at 4 points by 1/4" flat stock . Can you buy the hinges? I'm trying to watch the weight but build the ramps strong at the same time. All guidance appreciated.

Sam

I would use channel steel with angle inside with the V pointing down for better traction and footprint coverage. 2 Tons ? how heavy is your unit? If it weighs 2,000 pounds thats only 500 pounds per tire X 4 and your wheelbase is a factor

Hello Mr. Jimi,

I load mostly my lawnmower, and 4-wheeler. I loaded my car in there once to take the shop. I'd like to build the ramps to the capacity of the trailer which has 2 5k lb axles, as I may have to haul a tractor on it someday.

Sam, I made a car trailer for my self and I just made a lip on the ramp that sits in another lip on the trailer I have a Corvette on it now and thats about a 4K pound car

I made a set of 5' ramps for my 12k bumper pull. 3" medium channel with 2x3/16 angle for the runners. I also placed a 2x3/8 flat bar over the angle that fits onto the ramp lip on the trailer. You can see this in the picture. The reason for this is I can't tell you how many ramps I've repaired that broke at the top where the angle hooks over the ramp lip on the trailer. I've loaded 5,000lb trucks and they haven't bent the least bit. They are just light enough to pull out of the ramp trays without breaking my back. If memory serves me correct, they weigh about 53lb each. The second pic shows the ramp lip they hook onto. It is covered with C2 marking tape.

I made my ramps just like Gary's except, I mounted my angles with the V pointing down, I tried it like his and I noticed my tires fell in the hollow spaces
Nice ramps Gary

Thanks for the compliment. I think ramps with the angle iron V pointing down work better, but unless they are stored unside down in the ramp trays, they collect water and muck.
