Trailer for sale. What's it worth?

My folks keep a camper at our place to stay in when they come through and we had a little fire....well a big fire. By the time the FD got it put out I wished I had never called them. What a mess! The good news is, now that the demo work and hauling everything off is done I'm left with a pretty nice 28' trailer w/ 4500lb axles and brakes. Although the camper itself was a total loss, the wheels/hubs/tires/axles and frame were basically untouched. I just bought a new trailer last year and don't need this one so it looks like it's going on Craigslist. Now the big question, what's it worth? I have a title but it is for a totaled camper so anyone buying it may have to apply for a home made title...which is easily done in these parts so I don't think that should detract a great deal from the value but I am willing to take that into consideration.

I'm also wondering if this could be made into a decent round bale hauler if it was beefed up a little and the axles were moved a little more forward?

Start by searching the local CL for a few days and see what offerings that might be similar go for... You need the local market "read" anyways...

I think you would need to beef it up a lot to handle hay. Certainly the axles would need to replaced. My families 16' hay trailer has 2 6K axles. The outside frame is 5" channel, the inner frame is 3" channel. Two pieces of 5" and two pieces of 3" channel run the enitre length of the trailer. The cross pieces were 3" angle every 4'. The cross pieces bowed in the middle from the weight of hay bales resting there. We later added 2" channel between each cross brace.

My guess is that the shell of the camper provided significant support to the rails below.

in my neck of the woods camper frames like that fetch between 500-750 with no deck.

If it were me, I would go the opposite way and shorten it up to about 20-22ft and use it to haul 5k-7k lb loads. I think that would be the smart thing to do rather than try and beef it up for really heavy loads.

I would sell it for $600. Like others said it will need beefed up to haul a car or tractor and I would also list on the bill of sale it sold as scrap. I would also not provide the title. Lose that.:thumbsup:

Putting it as scrap and losing the title will limit you from liability down the road. They can get a home built title as you say. Just provide them with a bill of sale and make sure you do not list it as a trailer but as scrap or something like that. You never know what damage was done by the heat of that fire. You want no part of that.

Darryl I can not see that it has any value for hauling any loads like you mentioned. It has no real frame to work with since was designed to carry a self supporting box.

i just bought an old 25' (floored length) with axles and frame that will carry 18,000 pounds for $700 off of CL. There are a lot of great trailers outh there ready to roll for $750 to $1500.

With that being said I think if someone had a project in mind that could use a light frame like that they may be very happy to pay $500 or $750.

i would think that it would be bought as a project for some one, either for the metal and axles or either or and then parts used or changed, i think very few people would use it by just putting boards onto it. My guess is that it may be worth closer to $400 and that would be for the axles and the metal, but i have no idea?

Every location has its own character. In my neck of the woods you can get more for axles alone than for something like that. I think everyone sees the frame as a project. They see axles as parts. Axles would fetch about $150 a piece if they have good working brakes.

If it were me I'd sell it for what the market will bear and build or buy the round bale trailer.
