Tractor won\'t start because of PTO.

Last night I was doing some brush hogging and I ran over something large with the brush hog. Not thinking I shut the tractor off before I disengaged the PTO. Now I can't get the tractor to start again because the PTO is engaged. I have tried moving it into the disengaged position, but it does not disengage.

The tractor is a 2001 TC25, it's the rear PTO. I have removed the drive shaft from the PTO. Can anyone help me with suggestions on what I need to do to get the tractor started again?

Thanks for any advice you might be able to give me.

Hi Mike,

Can youpull up the wiring digram from the NH site?

JD has mid & rear PTO sensors that the wiring harness plugs into on the 3x20 series... mine got switched, so the mid PTO wouls spin while you are off the seat!

If same system used on NH, could maybe get it started by unplugging the safety sensor, then plugging back in... would first try with PTO engaged, as thats the state it's in... disengaged if that doesn't work (provided you can do this without being near the shaft!)....

Could even be able to pull a fuse out to do the same thing...

Dealer should be open pretty soon though!

Good Luck!

Check your fuses.. I wasted 45 minutes working on the safety switches because my pto light wouldn't go off.. fuse was blown.

Like Ken said, check the fuses. Also check to see if you have a wire pulled lose under the tractor. Chances are it is one of the two, given the way that it quit working.

Re: Tractor won\'t start because of PTO.

Some of the Boomers have a history of the PTO lever or Range Lever needing to be jiggled to make the switch make contact. I'd turn the ignition to start while jiggling the PTO lever in the OFF position. If that doesn't work, I'd try the Range lever by doing the same thing. That might get things going.

There's really no reason you should not be able to disengage the PTO after the tractor is shut down.

Re: Tractor won\'t start because of PTO.

There is a little switch under the fender that tells the tractor whether the PTO is engaged or not. My TC24DA came new with that switch out of adjustment. Being my first tractor, it took about 30 minutes and the owners manual to figure out what the light on the dash meant.

The jiggling trick worked sometimes, but not always. I finally adjusted the switch and have not had a problem since.

For me it was the wire that got pulled loose under the tractor. Found it by accident as I was looking under the tractor at the PTO lever area. 'Hmmm, why does it look like this connection got pulled apart?" Put them together and WHAMMO. Tractor started right up.

Thanks for all the help. Sorry I did not write back sooner than this. I lost my password and got busy with working on building the new house and got side tracked.

Turned out one of the PTO wires under the platform was pulled loose while I was brush hogging.

Now I am unable to get it started again. I was using it the other day and turned it off. Since then I have been unable to get it going again. PTO's are off, it's in neutral, parking brake set (although it starts without being engaged normally). I get power to the instrument cluster when I turn it on. Glow plug heats up, but when I turn the key to turn the starter I get nothing. The starter doesn't even try to turn. Not sure what to do with that.

Check for a blown fuse. My TC33 did the same thing and that fixed the problem.

Check to see if it needs to be in neutral, and have the clutch pressed.

Fuse is next check.. though on my NH.. if the fuse is bad.. there are no dash indicators..
